He was so large now, more so than before, when he left for Russia. All the big lines of his body are sharp and puffy. He stands like a statue in a black flannel button-up and washed-out jeans.
She remembers the night he left, dressed in his military uniform. A bag full of gear by his feet and a plane to catch.
Where have you been, she wants to ask him, and when did you get back? Why are you here?
The unwavering scrunch around the edges of his gaze dissolves when she looks up at him from under her dewy lashes, after seeing the way her hands ball at her side.
A crumbled resolve. She was scared.

Summary
