It wasn’t the pain that stirred him awake this time but the murmur of voices—several of them—just outside his room. As a knight, his instincts told him to be on high alert, assess the situation, and act accordingly. But what could he possibly do when the mere act of opening one eye and straining to listen sent sharp waves of pain coursing through his head? It was enough to make him fleetingly wish he could fling himself out the nearest window.
Maybe Kaeya would really die today. On his birthday.
Statistically speaking, dying out of mere season-cold was uncommon, but Kaeya felt like he might be, for this special occasion of his birthday. Might as well write this down the history of being the first person to ever die of a mere cold. What a legacy that would be.
Through the daze, Kaeya tried to find his voice, “Let me guess—Albedo gave you my house key?”

Kaeya should be better by now. It’s been well over a week, though, and Kaeya’s fever still hasn’t broken.
Things are difficult between Kaeya and Diluc when Kaeya is delirious. They can be just as difficult when he’s lucid. He keeps asking why Diluc is here, and sooner or later, Diluc just might have to tell him.
“Kaeya, shh, it’s okay,” Jean soothes. “Nothing bad is going to happen.”
“You don’t understand,” Kaeya rasps. “I’ve damned them all. My people, my family… they all— they’ll all be turned to monsters…”
Diluc considers turning around and leaving. He’s no good with this sort of thing. But he wants to be here for Kaeya. He wants to do better. Reluctantly, he steps inside.
Kaeya’s eye is wide with fear as it lands on Diluc. “You heard that?” he asks, shakily. “I-I didn’t mean it. I don’t care about them anymore.”
Diluc frowns. “What—“
“They’re not my people,” Kaeya insists. “Please. I’m on your side.”

Usually, it’s just a slight wound, a smaller laceration of his skin that won’t even require any sort of healing from Barbara. Maybe a bit of burning from a flaming arrow, or a lick of ice from a cryo abyss mage that was even a bit too cold for him.
This time, however, he’s beginning to assume it’s a little different.
