“The boy’s remote,” Watto muttered.
Qui-Gon didn’t so much as glance at it as he crooked his fingers. A second remote slid swiftly from the Toydarian's belt and joined the first, sailing into the Jedi's hand. “I’m taking his mother as well,” he declared, secreting the two in a pouch.
Watto rounded on him, snarling. “I told you, no pod is worth two slaves!”
The snap-hiss of Qui-Gon’s lightsaber filled the workshop, the green blade casting cold light over piles of wares. “Is your life?” he asked mildly.

Qui-Gon frees Anakin, but the Force isn't satisfied. Seeking to avoid a dark future, Qui-Gon goes one step further.

Summary
“Going somewhere, Master?” Obi-Wan froze on the ramp as Anakin’s amused voice cut through his hasty, unasked acquisition of the Twilight. Heaving a sigh, he turned around.
“I need it for an errand for a few days. You and Ahsoka are Temple-bound for the next few weeks. I figured you wouldn’t miss it,” he replied. And if I don’t ask you for it, you’re not implicated, no matter what happens to me.

“Bring the boy to the Temple for training, you may not. Forbid it, I do!” Yoda snapped at Qui-Gon, thumping his gimmer stick against the marble floor of the Nubian palace.
“He is the Chosen One. He will bring balance to the Force,” the younger master said calmly. “We cannot leave him untrained.”
“Too old. Too full of fear, he is,” Yoda was shaking his head. “Understand and feel compassion, I do, but jeopardize the Order, I cannot.”
“I will train Anakin Skywalker, Master Yoda. I will resign from the Order and see it done."

Qui-Gon survives the duel with Darth Maul. When Yoda insists that Anakin cannot be trained, he resigns from the Order to teach him anyway. But Anakin is a child of the desert and Ar-Amu, a former slave who has his own ideas on what his destiny entails. Amongst other things, he will not be calling Qui-Gon 'Master'.
