Summary
Kazuki narrows his eyes and steps over the package to look down the hall, first on the right and then on the left. It's predictably empty, the elevator silent. Whoever left it for them must have dashed right after ringing, which doesn't bode well.
He pauses momentarily to wrap the dishcloth around his hand, picking up the envelope cautiously. If it's coated with something he'd rather have gloves, but if it's dangerous he doesn't want to bring it into the apartment.
The envelope contains a single photograph. It's of Miri, at the park on the slides. Kazuki can feel his heartbeat pounding furiously in his chest, so loud he can imagine the sound it's making vibrating down the hall. His sight narrows down to her laughing face, slightly blurry but completely recognizable. He turns it over.

Summary
He hadn't thought at all about gender in that moment.
He'd been thinking of survival and freedom. The light from the open door guiding their ascension to familiarity, friends, and a further future together.
He was pulled back by his arm, spun back to the spiraling dark abyss they could easily fall back into, if they weren't careful. Edwin's heart laid bare in Charles' hands, the personification of all his insecurities rushing up on eight legs behind him to rip them both apart.

Edwin busies himself tidying the cards on the ground between them, stacking them into neat piles alongside the game board. He pointedly does not watch Charles’ face when he clarifies: “Like the Devlin house.”
“Yeah,” Charles says, too fast. “Yeah, like that. Only maybe, uh, not that one yet? I will tell you, obviously, ‘cause I’d be a proper useless detective if I got stuck like that every time something reminded me of -”
“Alright. I have a question.”
