There. That tangle of thick vines… she recognised it. That was right by where Steve had been attacked earlier. She moved quickly over to it, spotting the three dead bats clumped together, black blood spreading from their bodies.
If that was where Steve had been attacked, that meant that the gate was just a few feet behind her. Nancy whipped around, stepping blindly forwards, eyes raking over the ground ahead of her.
The gate was nowhere to be seen.
They were too late.
“Oh shit.”

When Vecna opens his gates by killing his victims in s4, they don’t stay open forever, trapping the older teens inside the upside down indefinitely.

Summary
On June 1st, 1985, Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers disappeared without a trace. One month later, Dustin picks up a Russian code on his radio that leads to him, Steve and Robin finding the two missing teens.
But the enchained, broken people they find, who refuse to even look at each other, are hardly the same people who went missing.
Terrible things happened in the Russian base. Healing won’t be easy, especially when no one seems to know exactly what happened.

Over the course of his impromptu, and most unprecedented sojourn, Steve was forced to come to the conclusion that there were, in fact, no possible comfortable positions to be had when you were 5 '11 and stuffed in the cold, unforgiving depths of your own high school locker.
Fucking fantastic.
Or, Steve keeps finding himself in small, dark spaces and well, it's just getting embarrassing at this point.

By this point, Charles had entirely given up on his paperwork, and was poring over his memories of the night before. Funny how Monty could distract him so completely, whether he was around or not.

“What do you mean what happened?”
“I just…” Jonathan’s eyes flicked up past Steve at the sound of the backdoor creaking open. “Mom.”
Steve turned to see Mrs. Byers’ in the doorway with a glass of water and a bottle of something. Probably the painkillers she’d promised. She gave him a matching look of concern and confusion, although she was quicker to conceal it.
He started to feel hot and embarrassed with the reaction he was getting. It hadn’t been meant to slow anything down, let alone draw everyone’s eyes to his bare chest. He leaned down to grab his soaking wet shirt off the back steps, although it was really just an excuse to look down and away from everyone’s gazes.
Mrs. Byers’ put out a hand as if to tap him on the shoulder and then drew it back like she was worried about hurting him.
“Steve, honey, you can borrow one of Jonathan’s shirts."

Summary
Something cool lands on his forehead, and when he opens his eyes, Jonathan Byers is pressing a damp rag to his forehead. The lights in whatever room he’s in have all been turned off, but he can still make out Jon’s bowl cut with his remaining vision. Everything's still blurry, from sleep and the remaining auras, but it’s nowhere near the level it was before he passed out.
Oh. Right. He had passed out. In class.

Nancy reached out, brushing Steve’s hair from his face. She had to keep reminding herself that he wasn’t hers anymore.
She’d ended that, tonight actually. Though, if she was honest, it had ended a long time ago.
His words from earlier tonight echoed in her ears.
