Nothing good comes out of a middle-of-the-night phone call. It’s never someone calling to say they got the job, or that they’re engaged, or that something finally worked out the way it was supposed to. Those calls wait for morning and a version of the world where good news has room to exist. Rebecca’s head flopped back against the padded headboard. “When you put it that way…” He had a way of making her want things she’d never even considered.
