Summary

Bobby is now in front of him introducing him to some of the other firefighters, but Eddie can hardly hear whatever it is they’re saying because he can’t take his eyes off the man standing like a statue a few feet away, with wide deer-caught-in-the-headlights-eyes, open mouth, and white as a sheet of paper. The man who abandoned him and his son three years ago. The man who is still the love of his goddamn life. Captain Nash is waving him over, and Evan finally starts moving, slow and clumsy, like a zombie.
“Eddie, this is Buck. Buck meet Eddie Diaz,” Bobby says.
“Buck?” Eddie asks dumbfounded, still not believing what is happening.

Any semblance of control Eddie had tore apart at the seams; a pair of jeans he’d been growing out of for a long time. He couldn’t keep squashing himself down, couldn’t keep holding back on the anger and the betrayal.
Because putting Buck next to his own parents was— illuminating. Buck who had handed himself willingly to a serial killer for his older sister, while Eddie’s own parents actively worked to take his child away.
“No.” Eddie answered, so overwhelmed with emotion that it somehow evened out to sounding numb. “No. No, I am not going to stand here and fight over my child with you while the love of my life is at the very least in serious danger if not— if he’s not—”
He hadn’t heard his son enter. He hadn’t heard Sophia either.
Only when Christopher interrupted did Eddie realise.

Eddie bit his lip as he looked at the unusually worried Bobby. “Whatever it is, it’s gotta be better than me thinking you were firing me,” he said, trying to lighten the mood.
“This has come from the executives,” Bobby warned. “And I should tell you, they said it won’t always be easy, both in terms of working and the potential response. But they’re very keen to do something that shows that they’re inclusive and they think that using Dance Idol is the best way forward. They asked me to consider who I wanted to do this, and I thought of you, Eddie, as my best professional dancer. Although, I will deny that comment about you being the best, if anyone asks again, bear that in mind.”
Eddie’s head was whirling, well aware that Bobby still hadn’t properly answered any question. “What do they want?”
“They want a same sex dance partnership.”
