Kevin was still crouched on the ground, so instead of getting up, he turned his head to look behind him, already knowing who it was he was about to face.
Shelly Marsh.
She was standing there a couple of feet away and the expression on her face was more so surprise than anything else. Kevin had his half-eaten sandwich in one hand and he still had his backpack open on the ground, a few of the food items sitting beside it. Considering he was crouched beside a dumpster, one could easily infer what it was he had been doing.
Kevin was suddenly hit with a huge wave of embarrassment at being caught in this kind of situation. This was definitely up there for one of the most humiliating moments of his entire life.

Kevin wasn't aware of this yet, but Kenny's birth had been complicated at best. He'd been born so pale, his heartbeat so low the doctors thought he was dead at first. His tiny, fragile body had many machines connected to it for his first hours of life. Everyone thought he wouldn't be able to make it, but in the end he managed to stay alive through it all.
But Kevin didn't know that. He just saw his little brother reaching out at him with his tiny hand, and decided he'd protect him forever.
