At the end of season 3 Jane has moved away permanently to live with her aunt. The party has broken up. Jonathan has moved to California for a better future. Hopper is dead and upside down is completely gone.
Will byers is miserable and alone. His best friends have changed in front of his eyes. Ever since presentation they have drifted apart. Mike and Lucas are hanging out with their new friends from basketball and Dustin has joined another club called hellfire without him.
To make matters worse, he's presented as an omega, a male omega.

Will sighs as Robin holds her speech, pretty much the same one she's given every time someone went missing. Rebecca is the nineteenth person. Ironic, Will thinks. She went missing on the 19th of January 1989. He didn't know her and from the looks of it nobody else in this house did. It's a horrible relief. One that leaves them feeling reproachable.

Summary
A different kind of understanding begins to expand in Will’s middle, disconcerting and terrible. Something that no person should feel, ever. Something that he feels regardless. A fucking certainty that being killed would be better than whatever comes next. Because the killer presses his knife to Will’s throat once more, fits it into his open wound in an act that could read as mockery, or a slow, torturous continuation, but when Will winces, nothing happens. The silence kills him, hurts him and revives him all in one toxic cycle. Then, the knife is pulled back… Sheathed again.
And the killer reaches for Will’s hands… slow… languid… the time’s on his side and the Byers house is not alive.
He grabs them. Laces their fingers and moves them above Will’s head. It stretches Will’s body off the stairs--
And in, the killer leans, and in a distorted voice, whispers--
“I can love you, Will.”
Thirteen vicious murders in Hawkins almost lead to a fourteenth. Will was supposed to die on that night. He interested the killer for reasons that are hardly as simple as they're made to seem, and the story of why Mike wants Will has its roots in what happens when love and obsession meet.

Summary
Will nodded quietly. Normally the idea of getting close to someone new terrified him, but there was something about that boy that pulled at him. Something beyond curiosity. For some reason, Will could see parts of himself reflected in him in ways he never really had with anyone else. So, against his better judgment, he decided to take the risk.
“By the way... do you know D&D?”
“Dungeons & Dragons?” the other boy asked “I’ve heard of it, but I don’t really know much about it.”
“Oh. Right.” Will immediately looked down, embarrassed.
“But,” he interrupted quickly, “I’d like to learn. If you wanna teach me.”
And suddenly, Will found himself thinking about how strange life could be. Because just when he thought his world would stay exactly the same forever... He might actually be making a new friend. And for once, there were no supernatural monsters involved.
Or:
In the summer of 1985, Will Byers makes a new friend, one that is more like him than he could've imagined. This friendship might change a lot of things about how he sees himself and the world around him. Mike is not exactly thrilled about the idea, but he may learn some important things along the way.

"What are you doing here?" Will says, sounding exactly as he intended. Not welcoming, sharp.
Mike's face is confused, but the emotion quickly fades to something formless, empty, as if Will had cut away all the bullshit Mike had been preparing for him with one question. Mike takes another step forward.
"What, I can't visit my friend anymore?"
Shameless jerk.
"Yeah, right…” Will smiles bitterly, the rage in his chest warming his body, tearing him away from the porch. He takes two relaxed steps toward the dark-haired man. He can see how this has caught him off guard. "Because you needed me so much these past four months."
