Summary
Cressida Cowper was not a nice lady. She was not kind or quiet or demure, the way a lady ought to be. She didn't shine. She didn't curtsey deep enough. Her styles were too noisy. Her sleeves too big. And she was downright cruel.
These are some of the reasons she'd been given for why fewer and fewer men asked for a spot on her dance card each season. Which was fine with her, perhaps if she held out for another couple of years her parents would forget about her entirely and she could transition to spinsterhood in peace.
She had been fine being mean. She was good at it. It was one of the few things she was good at. As she aged, her demeanor got harsher and her sleeves got bigger and her prospects slimmed.
And then she'd been reintroduced to Eloise Bridgerton at a summer house party and it had all gone to shit. Because now she had ideas about women and competition and being nice and apologizing and caring and living authentically.

Summary
For some reason, Eloise appears oblivious to the fact that she is indeed popular amongst the ladies of the ton. She always seems as if she is thinking a hundred different things at once, and then suddenly she’ll do something sweet, like drop by her house in a blue dress that makes her look like she’s fallen from the sky and call upon her to ask if she’s all right.
Once, in the early days of their friendship, when they were still in the countryside, Cressida caught a slight cold and was barred from going outdoors for a few days. A servant slipped a note and box into her room. The box was a box of her favorite chocolates, mentioned offhand amongst a million other little things Cressida was probably rambling about, and the note said, Get well soon. Else I will not need to fake a sickness of my own to join your side. Yours, Eloise.
Sometimes, when she is feeling low, when her father is being particularly hard on her, when the house seems too big, too empty, too much, she picks up the note, which she’s kept, creased from the amount of times she’s folded it and looked at it, and thinks of that address. Yours.

Summary
They can't keep doing this. They can't. But it doesn't stop them from doing it again and again.
And it doesn't stop it from becoming something more.

“That’s me,” Whistler says, pointing to her car.
“No,” Lucy pouts. “We’re having fun.”
Whistler smiles. Somehow it looks better in the clear moonlight than it did inside the bar. “We have work tomorrow. Fun has to end eventually.”

Summary
“I can’t think right now,” Lucy says. She wants to push Kate back onto her desk and drop to her knees but she doesn’t say it out loud. She’s jittery and lost and circling in her own head, the judge’s reveal that he was in on it, how fragile the glass felt against her back, the risk she took jumping out at him. The relief when she crashed into Jesse, how shaky Kai’s smile was, the terrified look on his face when he turned back from looking over the edge.
