They’d spread a blanket on the grass in the garden on this nice spring afternoon. Valjean lazily combed his fingers through Javert’s sun-warmed hair, admiring the silvery curls. Javert hummed contentedly, rubbing his cheek against his shirt. Valjean smiled and lifted his head to kiss his forehead. Who’d have ever thought the feared Inspector Javert could be so cuddly.
„Are you comfortable, pet?“ Valjean strove to keep his voice light. Neither of them had expressly voiced it, but Javert was so eager to please, just like a dog. He thrived on praise, just like a dog. And he could relax like he never did otherwise when he laid his head in his lap and Valjean played with his hair. He wanted to offer him this. Become his dog, forget about his worries.
„Very,“ Javert answered, then the endearment registered. He lifted his head to look at him. „Pet?“ He cocked an eyebrow, but there was something vulnerable, longing on his face.
„Aren’t you, dear?“ Valjean slid his hand down to his neck, rubbing his thumb over that spot behind his ear. „My good boy, my obedient dog.“

Cosette has always wanted to know more about her Papa's past than the bare bones he told her after her engagement to Marius. When she gets hold of a newspaper describing the bagne of Toulon, she decides to visit during her holiday. When afterwards she plans to talk to Valjean about it, Javert has other ideas.
Javert's thoughts came to a screeching halt when his eyes locked onto a newspaper lying open on one of the tables. For a moment it seemed to him he smelled the salty sea water and the stench of unwashed bodies, the smooth wood of the baton in his hand. The brooch Cosette was wearing flashed into his mind. Smooth, polished coconut intricately carved. Made to earn a few sous on the side. He quickly turned the page to another article. Jean mustn’t see this. He hoped he hadn’t noticed the brooch. What was she thinking? What had she been doing there?
