"It's nothing," Hitoshi insists, picking up his spoon. It's nearly slipped into his beef stew entirely. He starts to eat and tries his best to act normal. "What were you asking me?"
Unfortunately, Kazama doesn't take Hitoshi's hook to change the subject. He just hums, tapping his fingers on the table. "Does your weird attitude have to do with Valentine's Day?" There's a pause, and Hitoshi savors the silence as much as he can. It might be the last time. "Or the fact that there's two hero students staring at us?"
Hitoshi almost spits out his stew. He barely covers his mouth and coughs to the side. "What?"

Hitoshi had no expectations for Valentine's Day until he saw Midoriya waiting outside his classroom.

Midoriya can't help but stare. It's hard to read his expression, especially in the faint moonlight, but there's something wary in his tone. The question is poised out of genuine curiosity, though, not because he wants Midoriya to be scared.
"No," he answers. The words feel like they're stolen from his mouth, flying out into the night sky. "Not at all. You saved me."

He lets go as Midoriya staggers back, eventually falling on his ass. A couple specks of blood dot the ground, and Hitoshi's eyes follow their falling trajectory back to his classmate.
"Shit," he says worriedly. He moves towards Midoriya, falling to his knees in front of the boy. When Midoriya doesn't look up when Hitoshi says his name, he grabs under his chin and tilts his head up to assess the damage. "Midoriya, are you—?"
"That was amazing."

Dear Midoriya, it starts, and the rest is an utter word vomit of venting about feelings and fighting and Hitoshi's fucked up self doubt, and most importantly a—a—
Hitoshi squeezes his eyes shut and pinches the bridge of his nose.
He wrote a confession letter.

Aizawa levels a stony stare at him. “Eri could kick your ass right now, kid.” Midoriya isn’t cowed, so Aizawa defers to a time-honored tactic: a threat. “If you cannot exercise even that basic amount of judgment, I don’t have high hopes for your future as a hero. Come to class sick again, and I’ll expel you.”
