It’s been a week and a half by Lan Wangji’s careful count, and Jiang Wanyin has not returned. Nor has anyone else, for that matter, but given how close Wei Ying and the Jiang sect heir seemed, Lan Wangji cannot help but worry. Could something have happened to the other disciples? The Wen likely said that they all died during a hunt; would they have posted watch on the cave to ensure no one survived? Summary
'With age comes mortality.'
Wei Wuxian had always scoffed at that saying, missing the point. He didn’t think himself immortal or invincible but that had never been the true meaning of the saying. Most young people will always cling to the hope that things will turn out okay because that is what they are taught in every fairy tale they have ever read. They cling to it so tightly that it forms a security blanket, protecting them from the very present reality that death could be looming just ahead of them.
"Choose your battles."
There was facing danger for the sake of duty and then there was seeking it out.
The duty of a cultivator was to protect the common people from the dangers that they weren’t equipped to face. But there was no one to protect here but himself.
"Choose your battles wisely, Wei Ying. You never know when they could come seeking you instead."
