“How are the girls?” Olruggio asked, leaning back in the hospital bed. “Did any of you get hurt?”
It was torture.
Qifrey didn’t want to admit to it, he wasn’t sure he could say the words out loud.
He wouldn’t be able to handle the disappointment on Olruggio’s face, or the harsh tone it’ll stain into his voice.
He sighed, burying his face into his hands.
Qifrey already condemned himself the moment he ran from them, it was only a matter of time until Olruggio did the same.
“I left them there.”
Qifrey could hear his heartbeat in his ears, and feel how hot his neck was burning with shame.
He wasn’t prepared for it.
“What do you mean you left them there?”
The anger, the accusation.
The disappointment.
Or
A little story where everyone discovers that Qifrey, when forced to choose, will always choose Olruggio.
For better or worse.

He’s disciplined a great deal. I thought, what a fine thing, two young apprentices, similar ages, similar circumstances—”

Forced to spend an afternoon together by their masters, a young Qifrey and Easthies discover that they have absolutely nothing in common. This does not stop them from stumbling into an adventure.

"All of this to say, due to his need to protect his children, the Justice League was not aware of his family. He had contingency plans in case any of the kids became compromised, but for the most part they were not needed, as his children knew how to stay in the shadows and (mostly) obey orders.
That all changed because of a stupid family tradition."
