    Summary

Somewhere between Adrian and Erid, Rocky invents the xenosuit to help Grace. It turns out they both needed it.

"The thing about sharing a spaceship with a guy in a hamster ball is you end up doing the grunt work. So here we are, en route to an alien planet, and I am once again hanging off the side of the dang ship. At least this time I’m securely fastened and not watching us sink toward our doom."

“But you said you didn’t have a word for – for forcing someone into reproduction?”

No. Is different, but equivalent violation. Means, to force to sleep.

Or, Dr. Ryland Grace has yet to confront the choices taken from him. Eridian norms, ironically enough, force the issue.

    Summary

I never noticed. There are no mirrors in my house; there are no mirrors anywhere on Erid, at least not in the sense that we understand them. There’s reflective surfaces, but not intentionally so. My attention has been tugged this way and that, always something new to discover, or else something new to research in the endless encyclopedia I was left with. I had no reason to look at my own body beyond what was necessary to keep it clean.

But now I’m sitting here, and it stares me in the face. Emphasized by my position, my stomach rises up and over my waistband, forming a soft mass that spills slightly over my sides.

“Oh,” I say out loud. I run a hand over this new pudge that probably isn’t new at all, startling slightly at the texture of it. Soft. Yielding. Slightly cold from the water evaporating on it. I touch my body like it isn’t my own, because for a long, long time, it wasn’t. I touch it the way Rocky touched me once he finally had the option to, committing everything to memory, matching it to what he already knew.

Or: In the two years that he spent on Erid, Grace has changed in just about every way imaginable. But one way in particular feels more significant than the rest.

    Summary

"Many stages in Eridian reproductive process. Rocky Adrian laying cycles finally sync up recently. So, Rocky Adrian think finally time for eggs. Adrian lay five eggs, very good. Only, strange thing happen. Rocky only lay one egg."

“Oh,” I say. “That’s unusual, right?”

    "Very," Rocky hums.

My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"

Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"

    Summary

"The cold, white gaze of Mary's walls greets me first. All the lifetimes of things that I witnessed, went through, was complicit in have never stopped weighing on me, and now, sick and bed-bound, I have no other choice than to let myself think about it. No excuses of saving Earth, no desperate rescue mission for Rocky before only a corpse was left of his brilliance, no more trying to fend off the looming risk of malnourishment. There's nothing else but to sit with it. And I don't know what I'm meant to do with it all. I really don't know."

    -

Ryland Grace is a slowly dying man, carrying the unbelievable trauma and guilt of having to be forced onto a suicide mission for the sake of humanity. He cannot hold onto this alone, not forever. But what on earth would Rocky, the one who he loves above all, think of him if he learns the truth? That he is not the selfless man who gave up his life to save his home that they both thought he was?
