Summary
She was halfway across the floor in a heartbeat, the shape of his name on her tongue, her lips fighting to curl into a bittersweet echo of a smile despite the sheen in her eyes. Her breath caught on the inhale, and he hardly had a moment to brace before her arms wrapped fiercely around him, holding the pieces of him together. He curled his fingers fiercely into the back of her tunic, holding her with all he had, attempting to do the same.

Summary
“Bren -” she starts again, but he impatiently shakes his head, dropping down to sit cross-legged on the ground. He pulls her down with him. Bare legs press into the grass; there will be a criss-crossed web of indents across their skin when they rise.
The wind whispers through the branches up above them, eerie in the approaching gloom, but he pays it little attention, instead furrowing his brow and sinking into careful thought, moving his fingers through the air in carefully practiced motions, repeating the gesture he had perfected that morning behind closed doors. Reaching into the ether, to find the ether reaching back.

Summary
The thing about habitat conservation was that it focussed, primarily, on time. To most people it was a study of nature and animals and how to ensure ecological populations thrived, and that was true to an extent. But at the heart of it all was the ever-present tick of the clock, the forward momentum of the universe, the steady increase in entropy as years passed by. She spent every day of her life following trajectories and mapping changes, one eye on the past and one on the future, so she ought to have seen this moment coming. And yet, somehow, she just… hadn’t.

Summary
He had watched disdainfully not but a few hours before as she scrubbed blood from the table she now sits upon. Recklessness itches at the base of Astrid's spine, slowly seeping through bone to the back of her throat, her tongue, her lips. “You would trade your nation,” she asks, “for your mother’s life?”
The Shadowhand’s expression twists. He tastes several answers on his tongue, and Astrid watches as he toys with the mouthfeel of each before settling on a simple “Who wouldn’t?”
The bite of her own laugh slices right through her.

Summary
“Were you scared?” Frances asked softly, out under the stars with the wide expanse of space stretching above her.
Vanessa felt Frances’ gaze flit towards her, then drift back up to the sky, and out of the corner of her eye Vanessa watched an absentminded hand land on top of Frances’ head, Joan’s palm affectionately smoothing over the top of braids Frances shouldn’t have known how to do by herself yet.
“Terrified,” Vanessa admitted, because Frances, more than most people, deserved honesty.

Summary
It was that scar that had caused Wulf to falter, as he’d stood in the darkness, arm outstretched. Does Bren remember the rock Wulf had slammed into his skull, the air thick with smoke and freshly seared skin? Did he look into still water a decade later and catch sight of the scar left behind, only able to wonder about the hands that caused it?
“You didn’t kill me,” Caleb says.
There is a cavity forming at the centre of Wulf's chest, hollowing more and more with each day that passes in this new, unfamiliar after. “Did you expect me to?”

Summary
“I’m sorry I slipped away,” she murmurs. It has been on her mind for two weeks, since she melted away into the shadows whilst their friends had gathered with him, all desperate to drink in every second of the one night he had been promised, except for her.
“Forgive me,” he says, “for the ravens.”
And oh, how her chest carves itself in two.

Summary
Astrid Becke stands in her kitchen, dark shadows beneath her eyes.
Beau does not ask Why are you here. She does not say Go, she does not say For fucks sake, Astrid, it’s 3am. She does not demand - instead she pinches the bridge of her nose and closes her eyes, forcing her frustrated exhale to trap itself within her lungs, then reopens them and looks and sees. A spine, ramrod straight, proud. Steady shoulders as Astrid holds her gaze through the darkness. Beau’s favourite mug in her hand, steaming as if tea has been freshly made, a challenge in the set of her jaw.

Summary
“It smells good,” Fearne says softly, while Orym looks at the remaining herbs in his hands and tries to make sense of the neat handwritten labels.
“There’s no oregano,” he tells her. The words sound numb to his ears. He tries not to think of dried herbs that always hung in his and Will’s small kitchen on a drying rack gifted them when they first moved in, or about Ludinus's certainty, the callousness with which he presented a flawed argument and the stab of betrayal in Orym’s gut when those smooth words weren’t met with the vitriol they deserved from his friends, and fails. His chest caves in on itself.
“Fearne, there’s no oregano,” he repeats, and his eyes burn.
Or; Orym's just trying to make everyone dinner without falling apart in the process.

Summary
Astrid rises, brushing dust from her ruined clothing, and reaches towards him. The same hand that pulled him from Caleb’s grasp the day before curls around his own and although her skin is cooler, he feels the flames still, their touch uncharacteristically gentle. Eadwulf shivers despite them.
What does he want?

Summary
She now allows herself to taste the hard C of the new name Bren had returned with and loop around the L, and she does use it when the situation calls for it, but she sees how odd it feels reflected back at her in his eyes.
She thinks about leaving the name Bren in the ashes and digs her nails into the tattoos that run up her forearms, leaving crescent-moon shaped beads of red to pool just above her skin until she catches sight of Wulf watching her from across the room and releases her grip just a little. His silence is deafening. She glares at him, daring him to comment, but the silence remains.

Summary
It’s the only way she allows herself to still hold onto him, this shallow ritual they’ve created and grip tightly between their hands. They play along partly because if they keep going for long enough they’ll eventually end up with something that’s true, and partly because in their imagined worlds, the two of them can keep Bren safe in the way they failed to the first time around. He is out there, somewhere. He has to be.
“A town hermit near the Menagerie Coast," Wulf suggests, "living on the outskirts, giving out strange advice to people who get lost.”
Astrid laughs, at that one, laughs and laughs and laughs.

Summary
"I don't want you to hurt yourself," Beau admits, and he doesn't have a response to give her. Hurt has been tangled up with everything Astrid and Eadwulf are to him for so long by now that it would be impossible to untangle it from the threads that bind them together. He has already hurt himself. He will continue to do so, because they are Astrid and Wulf and the hurt he finds in them is familiar and feels like home.
He knows Beau is well aware this will never be simple.

Summary
She does not know why talking to Beauregard has undone her the way it has.
She hates the way Caleb lets her lash out at him, afterwards. He stands there in front of her with the open expression that's always felt so reassuring as grief rolls off her in waves, colliding with everything in her path. The central hall of his otherwise-empty tower stretches on but it still feels like the walls are closing in on her, crushing closer and closer until they'll reach where the two of them stand and crumble them into dust.

Summary
"So you think it's worth it?" Beau asks after too many hours to count, her voice cool. “Training Volstrucker? Children?”
Out of the corner of her eye Astrid sees both Caleb and Eadwulf’s backs straighten, a reflex left from a world they no longer have to live in, although neither of them intervene. All three of them know it has been a long time since she's let anyone else fight her battles.
Her response is eerily calm even to her own ears, but brittle. "It has to be."

Summary
"When did you find religion?" she asks, solely out of curiosity. It is perhaps not a question she should ask the first time she's interviewing Eadwulf alone, but curiosity gets the better of her and the words leave her mouth anyway, left to hang in the air like a pin that’s about to drop.
He looks tired as his fingers reach up to touch the side of his neck, but there is nothing there except an echo of the web of burn scars that dance across Astrid's skin. "You really have to ask?"

Summary
Beau shifts, ever so slightly, the few centimeters she closes meaning her arm presses firmly against his. It's deliberate, in that quiet, secure way of hers. There is nothing he could say that would make her get up and walk away; she is acknowledgement and acceptance rolled into one.
Caleb's words grow softer, but more certain. "Here is my confession: even if we had watched them take the world apart at Trent's side, I would not be able to hold it against them."

Summary
She was Natalia, when they first met. Natalia was quiet, angry, and full of fire - but exhausted, worn down, and not sure what there was to live for.
She became Natasha a little later; a choice made in the middle of the night, after one too many nightmares of a life she couldn’t break free from. Natasha was moonlight fading in and out of scattered clouds, salt tracks on pale cheeks, shaky breaths and crescent-shaped indents in pale palms. Waist length curls were chopped to her shoulders, the scissor-blades catching on frayed puppet strings as they worked and severing those too.

Summary
"Twenty minutes ago, the Doctor had chosen to hug her fiercely, cup her face with two warm palms, tell her she was brilliant and one of the best and deserving of every good thing the universe had to offer, and to bring her back here. Not to a street outside her home, but to the exact spot where two of the three people who knew her most were about to appear. To a time and place where instantly she’d have arms to fall into, she’d have people who would make sure she wasn’t alone with the aching loss stretching and pulling at the corners of her heart.
The Doctor knew her. She’d seen ‘easily finds herself lost’ etched across Yaz’s soul in indelible red pen and at the point in time where they were being forced to part ways, she’d brought Yaz right here to be found."
