    Summary

Gustave awoke to the gray light of early morning and Verso crouched beside the bed, two fingers wrapped around his wrist.

"What," Gustave managed, "are you doing."

"Your heart rate was elevated during sleep," Verso said, matter-of-factly. "Irregular breathing patterns. I wanted to ensure you were not experiencing a medical emergency."

"I was dreaming," Gustave said, with extraordinary care. "People do that."

Verso's brow creased slightly. "Oh." A pause, and something moved through his expression that resolved before Gustave could name it. "My apologies. I have logged this for future reference." He did not let go of Gustave's wrist.

    "You can let go now."

    "Your pulse is still elevate
    d."

    "Because you startled me awake."

Verso stared at him, and for just a moment, something like annoyance flickered across his expression.

In which Gustave comes across a destroyed android in the scrapyard. When VRS-0 wakes with no memory, neither of them are prepared for what comes next.

    Summary

Over ten years after he burned his canvases at the top of the Beaux-Arts de Paris and very publicly went off the rails, Verso Dessendre returns home, a prodigal son trailing rumors of a deeply private family grief. In those same years, Gustave LeClair has built an academic career restoring the aging bridges over the Seine, helping them bear the weight of both history and the humdrum day-to-day. If only he could do the same for his personal life.
They meet. The confusion is mutual.

thermal conductivity (n.) — the rate at which heat passes through a material; the tendency of two bodies in contact to trade warmth until they settle at the same temperature.

Verso saved Gustave's life at the Stonewave Cliffs and still won't admit why (not even to himself). Now it's freezing, Gustave is too stubborn to say he's cold, and Verso has been quietly, hopelessly gone for him for longer than he'll ever confess.

Or: there was only one blanket.

    ”En gardé, monsieur!”

Verso has a second to register it before he realizes he’s being cornered by three, very serious children. Gustave’s apprentices, to be more precise. Not the threat he first would’ve thought of, but there you go.

”What are your intentions towards Gustave?”

In which the apprentices have had enough of Verso & Gustave’s pining and confront Verso. They might also recruit some help while they're at it, and Verso suffers.
