Alec has spent most of his life hiding.
That's just the way things have always been. From a young age he knew he had to hide to keep himself safe, because there were people out there who would hurt him just for being born the way he was. To keep his secret, Alec has done his best to hide away the parts of himself he can't risk letting anyone see, only letting that part of himself out in the late night hours when no one's around and he can take to the skies.
