“Sorry, but unfortunately, you can’t be allowed to wake up yet, Cavalry Captain~!”
Before Kaeya could even voice how revolted he felt at the sickly, honey sweet tone of voice, he felt a prick in his neck, and he was taken under once more.

Everything had been going fine, until the conversation shifted dangerously towards the past, and specifically, Eroch.
“Traitor.” Diluc snarled. “Disturbing everyone and just committing suicide without any accountability for his actions.” He took a heavy breath, taking a rough sip of his drink. “What a coward.”
Under the table, Kaeya’s hand unconsciously grabbed his scarred wrist.

Or, to summarize, after hearing Diluc's opinion on Eroch's suicide, Kaeya can't help but be ashamed of himself, afraid of what Diluc would think of him if he knew the truth.

But, he is a sinner.
And, he was the prettiest man he'd ever seen.
He knew he could not stay. He couldn't find it in himself to be selfish enough to, no matter how much he may want it.
Even if said man was willing to take him in.

diluc escapes the fatui and seeks refuge with the person who aided his freedom’s family. it’s difficult to seek shelter in the home of the eleventh fatui harbinger, though. and diluc can’t bring himself to trust his savior or the man’s too-friendly relatives that now treat diluc like their son.
the worst part? the wings on diluc’s back make it so he couldn’t escape even if he tried.

"The Fatui. They're marching here now, Dottore, Pantalone, Capitano and Tartaglia are with them to take the city. We can't beat them or stop them, Kae. You need to leave!”
"Wait— Diluc, slow down. What are you talking about?"
"The Fatui are on their way to invade Mondstat right now. They're going to take all of the Knights to make sure no one rebels. I know they will. You have to leave!"

The Fatui plan and execute an invasion of the City of Mondstadt at night, led by Dottore, Pantalone, Capitano, and Tartaglia. Diluc manages to warn Kaeya before they get to him, giving him time to flee the city so he may seek help from the neighboring countries.
However, they both know that Diluc isn't getting out of this unscathed.

People have been going missing. As Kaeya gets some intel that the fatui might be behind the disappearances, he goes to dragonspine alone despite Jean’s explicit instructions not to.
Little does he know, the information was meant to lure the other Ragnvindr brother. After sustaining a life threatening injury, Kaeya is used to bait in the real prize, Diluc. Unfortunately for the fatui, Kaeya knows one thing they don’t. Diluc would never come to his rescue.

The problem with being a mysterious anti-hero with a tragic backstory on a one-man mission to thwart the nefarious Abyss Order is that sometimes your actions will be misconstrued.
Anyway, Dainsleif should probably make it clear that he is not two-timing anyone before Kaeya and Lumine murder him in a fit of overprotective rage, and Diluc should make it clear he isn't about to elope with the other over-dramatic edgelord in a mask before Jean and the rest of Mondstadt throw him a tearful goodbye party.
