I am writing this article from a teacher’s perspective: I have worked in education since the age of 18 as a private vocal teacher. I am also a certified P - year 12 music teacher (age 4 to 18), and I specialise with students from age 11 to 16.

I’ve been in the fandom since I was fourteen, I’m now thirty-six, and have created a group specifically dedicated to Harry Potter Fanfiction. Over the years, I have seen so many fandom members leave our community and suffer from burnout.

The ability to constructively critique is a piece of knowledge I think our fandom needs and a knowledge our fandom is lacking.

An American friend of mine recently asked me for some Brit-picking tips on differences in smoking language/culture between America and England to be used in her Sherlock fic. I thought I'd go ahead and write a guide, including my experiences in other countries and some writing tips for how to portray characters who smoke. Much of this comes from personal experience, and it's not intended to be encouragement to smoke. Rated Teen and Up for swearing and talk of underage smoking.

There is a big difference between a trans man exploring his identity/sexuality through fanfiction, and a cis writer misrepresenting what it means to be FTM. If you're a cis writer with the best of intentions, I hope these guidelines and resources will assist you in improving your treatment of trans men.

Chapter 1: Writing Guide, FTM Anatomy.
Chapter 2: Gallery of Trans Men.
    Chapter 3: FTM Media Recommendations.
Chapter 4: Racism in Trans Headcanons.

This guide was originally posted on my old account, which has since been deleted due to transphobic comments, including threats of violence. I have posted it again anyway, because I take this matter very seriously. Do not repost, copy, or in any way plagiarise this guide. But please feel free to share a link to it, so that cis authors can improve the way that they depict trans men. I have tagged characters which are discussed in the guide, and are therefore relevant. If you encounter this guide while browsing those tags, that's why.

A thorough guide to beta reading for both authors and beta readers. Neither exhaustive nor definitive, but hopefully a good starting point that covers the basics and explains how to get the most out of an author-beta reader relationship.
