Summary
He wonders if Buck ever thinks about it.
The sheets sticking to his damp skin, their sounds of pleasure echoing around the room, Buck telling him all the things he’s thought about doing to Eddie before. How Eddie would let him without question, knowing Buck would still take care of him even when given all the power in the world.
What this means for himself is something that’s hard to bear thinking about.
Or, Eddie comes to terms with what he deserves.

Pepa takes a bite, holding them all in suspense as she chews. “Evancito, do you think my niece and nephew are interchangeable?”
Buck chokes. Eddie slaps him on the back, hard, until he stops coughing.
Sophia wouldn’t have known to do that. She isn’t a medical professional, and she certainly doesn’t know about Buck’s history with choking. For now, Eddie is still the Diaz who knows Buck best. The one who protects him and looks out for him.
“So,” Sophia says, drawing out the word. “I’m taking up hot yoga.”
“You’re already hot,” Buck says.
Eddie’s blood pressure is not up to this challenge.
Or: Eddie's sister comes to town. Eddie takes everyone joking about Buck finally finding a way to marry into the Diaz family so normally. So deeply normally.

Summary
Eddie didn’t know what to expect when they got dispatched to the call, but it certainly wasn’t this.
The man was bound, but the intricacy by which he was tied up was like nothing Eddie had seen before. It wasn’t just his wrists, but his arms were secured behind him, attaching him to the frame of the bed by something Eddie couldn’t quite see from where he stood.
It wasn’t a rushed job, from the little that Eddie could tell was going on. This was precise work—secure and firm in its structures. Their victim was completely bound. Immobile.
Something far back in his mind—shaped vaguely like a door, cracked open just enough to make Eddie suck in a breath and slam it back shut.
or, when Eddie learns something new about himself, it forces him to begin untangling a web of desires he's kept hidden for a long time.

“Are you mad at me?”
Eddie sighed heavily, and slowly. “No, I’m just – I don’t know. Did I make your coming out hard for you?”
Buck frowned, sitting up on the bed. “What?”
Eddie sighed again, turning on the bed to switch the light back up. They both closed their eyes for a second. “I’m asking you whether coming out to me was hard.”
Buck fell silent. Yes, but also… no. Not in the way he assumed Eddie was asking. “I mean, it was hard for me, inside my head, but it wasn’t hard once I was already telling you. You made it pretty easy for me, said all the right things.”
Eddie nodded.“Why?”
It was maybe hours, although maybe just seconds, before Eddie answered.
“Because you’re kinda making it hard for me.”

Summary
He should be glad of it. He doesn’t want people to know he’s struggling, and they don’t. But why doesn’t Buck know? He’s always known, always seen through Eddie’s carefully constructed walls and carved himself a door into them. Even when Eddie resisted, even when he pushed back, Buck ducked his head and shoved through and found the tender hurt Eddie was guarding, cupped his hands around it and held until it didn’t ache so much.
And now Eddie’s bleeding internally, swollen with regret, and Buck doesn’t say a thing. Eddie can’t ask him to. If he opens his mouth, he might just start screaming.
~
There's distance between Eddie and Buck. Eddie isn't falling apart. These are two equally true statements.

“I got this thing,” Eddie says, catching him in his tracks.
“Thing?”
Buck turns fully toward Eddie, because if Eddie’s gonna drop something on him, he’s going to look directly at it. No mercy.Eddie blinks – once, twice – the only crack in his cool.
“A while back, an army buddy invited me to his wedding. Figured by the time it rolled around, I’d… have someone.” He breathes out through his nose. “So I put down a plus one.”
Buck loses it a little. Not out loud, not dramatically. Just this bright grin that won’t quit.
“The wedding’s Saturday. If you don’t have plans… you wanna come with me?”
Buck’s smile falters. His chest does this weird, traitorous flutter he absolutely did not authorize.
“Yeah,” he blurts, fast enough to shut down whatever escape hatch Eddie’s about to offer him. “Yes. Sure. I mean– yeah.”
or, Eddie invites Buck as his plus one to his buddy’s wedding; it all goes exactly like one would expect.

“Buck?” Ravi asks, leaning in closer.
“Yeah?” Buck, the human man, replies.
“No, Buck,” Hen grabs the photo from Chim’s hand and holds it out for everyone to see.
Buck, the 1.5x2” passport photo from 2019, stares back at them.
“Oh damn.”
Eddie smiles, he’s glad Buck isn’t too freaked out by it.
(Buck is freaking out. The only people who have seen this photo, to his knowledge, are the post office employee that took it, and whatever person who approved it in the Department of State. Not even a TSA agent. He hasn’t gotten the chance to use it.)
Or, Eddie breaks his phone, reveals the photo he's kept of Buck inside the case for years, and suddenly everyone starts giving him their own photos. Buck is only a little bothered by it.

Eddie: What do you know about Buck’s date tonight?
Ravi: They’re going to some Greek place.
Ravi: And he’s kinda ugly.
“Oh this guy… sucks,” Ravi says.
“What have I been telling you this whole time?” Eddie throws his hands up dramatically.
“I liked you better when you were straight and sad all the time.” He pulls his laptop closer to himself and away from Eddie’s hands, “Now you’re evil and gay.”
“I’ll try not to live my truth and embrace joy next time if that makes you feel better.” Eddie reaches to pick up the laptop from Ravi’s lap, but he holds it out of Eddie’s reach before he can.
Or, Eddie assembles a team to cyber-stalk Buck's Hinge date. It gets a little out of hand when they discover things they probably never should have seen.

Summary
"Why is he so self-sacrificing all the time?" Eddie asks.
Maddie nods. He looks back at her, only to find that her eyes are a little shiny — Eddie probably could have anticipated that she might get worked up about all this. And then, all at once, it's like she bursts, unable or unwilling to keep holding it all in. "I hate it too. I can't believe he was just so ready to stay there, to be Derek."
"Wait —"
"Like, after everything with Daniel? All he's done to learn who Buck is? He's just. Going to pretend to be someone else's kid?" A tear shoots down her cheek and she wipes it away with the napkin from before.
"Wait, wait, wait," Eddie says. "I'm confused. What are you talking about?"
Maddie sniffs and looks at him in surprise. "What are you talking about?"
Eddie visits Buck, then Maddie, then Buck again.

“So, if he’s not your boyfriend, does that mean he’s single?”
Eddie’s stomach churns at the question.
“Um, well—”
Tom cuts him off.
“Do you think he’d say yes if I asked him out?”
Eddie doesn't know why he does it. He just knows that the idea of this man, Tom, wanting to ask Buck out makes him feel like he's going to throw up, so before he can even think about it, he blurts out—
“Oh, sorry, man, I just meant that he’s my husband, not my boyfriend.”
or; When Buck and Eddie are in Nashville for the firefighter competition, Eddie accidentally tells one of the other firefighters that he and Buck are married. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

Summary
On his first day, Eddie sees the ghost before he meets him.
There is a boy, younger than Christopher but not by much, who runs around the station like it’s a playground. For a second, while Eddie is pulling a shirt over his head, he thinks the boy is real and someone ought to be watching out for him because a fire station is no place for a kid that young to play unsupervised.
And then the boy, pale, skinny and too frail for his age, passes through an exiting member of C shift like wind through a plastic bag. A ghost.
“Who the hell is that?”
Eddie watches as the ghost – just a fucking kid, really – whips his head around to the voice. His face lights up and Eddie’s heart sinks because how cruel can this world be?
He turns around and Eddie is struck. The man is strong and broad, all blue eyes and defined features. If it weren’t for the splotch of color above his eyebrow, Eddie would think that the man and the little boy standing at his side were genetic matches.
OR Eddie Diaz can see ghosts — that’s nothing new. The little boy following around his new coworker is a different story.

Summary
Eddie had faced IEDs, ambushes, and screaming medevacs with steadier hands than he had when buttoning his shirt that night. He stood in front of his mirror for ten minutes just staring, half-expecting the reflection to give him a pep talk. It didn’t. It just looked like a man one bad haircut away from a breakdown. He tried on three shirts, two different belts, and nearly shaved his beard out of sheer panic before settling on a button-down that was clean, unwrinkled, and aggressively neutral.
Or: Eddie learns what it's like to be in a relationship with a military man.

Summary
“His shirt’s on inside out,” Josh commented to Linda. Eddie opened the door to the breakroom and tried to let it close behind him, but that did not deter either of his colleagues. “Is this a walk of shame?”
“Well, I am walking,” Eddie confirmed, rounding the counter and beelining to the empty coffee pot. “And full of shame.”
“What happened?”
“I stood him up,” he answered, shortly.
After what was probably a very involved silent conversation between Linda and Josh, Josh said, “Eddie, if you aren’t ready, I’m sure he’d understand.”
“I am ready,” he said, detaching the water reservoir with more force than necessary. “I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Summary
He left, and when he told Maddie she cried and Buck held her until she stopped shaking. He stayed for a dinner he made, and then well past Jee-Yun's bedtime and Chim had told him, seriously, when he was gathering his things and Maddie had fallen asleep on the couch, to do something that should have been simple. "Call Eddie."
"Sure," Buck said with a half smile and a bubbling in his gut.
He wasn't going to call Eddie. Eddie was busy, and Buck was an adult, and, in the grand scheme of things, his mother dying wasn't anything for anyone to worry about. She was dead, Eddie Diaz could stubbornly restart Buck's heart, but Margaret Buckley was well past the ressusitation point. Eddie was a lot of things (smart, capable, funny, handsome, adorable, so, so, so kind), but he wasn't a necromancer.
Besides, what had sent him back to Texas was much more important than Buck dead mother.
