He grabbed Theo by the waist as he tried to leap out the door, wrestling him to the ground. Theo dissolved into giggles, hair and tie already done for. It would be a miracle if he made it through the afternoon without staining his shirt, but Buck was laughing too. He couldn’t bring himself to care much about stains and scuffs and messy hair on a day like this.

Summary
Rocking back on his heels, Buck pushes himself up. He stretches his arms behind him as he climbs to his feet, shifting his weight from one foot to the other.
Then it hits.
Pain flickers through his left ankle, sparking beneath his skin and dancing across the bone.
Buck stumbles, almost falling into the refurbished flowerbed before he manages to catch himself. He winces and shifts all of his weight onto his right leg. The pain retreats to the same dull ache he had ignored a few minutes before, the sensation settling into the bone. It prickles beneath his skin like pins and needles, a slight numbness settling into his ankle. He reaches down and presses his gloved fingers to the bone, trying to feel for an injury he might have missed.

Immediately wide awake, Steve raises his head and looks to his left. Bucky is under the blankets, his shoulders shaking back and forth and his breathing growing sharp and short— still asleep but looking ready to wake up and throw a punch screaming.

It takes a sub only ten drops without a dom to fall into eternal sleep. That was the only undeniable, unchangeable, unavoidable truth that Steve knew.
And now that Bucky was gone, it was just a question of when before Steve reached that number.
That’s okay though. Steve deserved such a fate after how he had failed the man he loved. His only hope is that he’ll be able to do some good before his time is up.

Steve knew the look. He’d seen it plenty of times before. Washington D.C. was rampant with people suffering from different substance abuse disorders. So was New York. So was any village, town, or city in the nation if a person knew where to look.
When Bucky stumbles into Avengers Tower after the events of CA: TWS, Steve helps him through withdrawal from the numerous drugs Hydra had been pumping into him.
