An exploration on how MDZS’ narrative treats Wei Wuxian’s agency, and how despite all the tragic events in his life, this tragedy does not define him. Covering:
1. How the omission of periods where Wei Wuxian has little agency creates the impression that agency is important to his character (and how that impression is supported by text), and how the tragedy in his life enhances rather than diminishes that agency;
2. Wei Wuxian’s own attitude towards tragedy in his life, and how it’s a choice to not let tragedy define him (featuring an exploration of Jin Guangyao and Jiang Cheng as his foils); and,
3. How what’s shown and omitted is influenced by this attitude Wei Wuxian holds.
Here, narrative agency will be considered the ability of a character to meaningfully influence the story they’re in.

Wangji blinks. His head bobs in what’s probably a yes.

Fuck.
Or a ragged monosyllabic man wearing a collar shows up at Wei Ying's music store. Wei Ying and A-Yuan ask, is anyone going to adopt this guy? And then they don't wait for an answer.

Summary

Adopted by the criminal world, the Wen siblings and Wei Wuxian thought they had nothing to do with the cultivation clans anymore. However, old enemies had the unfortunate tendency to meet in a narrow path. They had to choose between continuing to hide and showing up to settle their old debts.
On the other side of society, Lan Wangji had to balance his loyalty and his sense of justice, his affection and his duties, as things were seldom as quiet as they looked in the cultivation world.
