Summary
Desperate to escape the clutches of a vicious cult leader who had murdered her mother, Phoebe travels to California in search of her biological father: James Macgyver. Instead, she encounters his son and her half-brother, Mac, who offers to help her locate and apprehend the murderous cult. As Phoebe tries to settle into her new life and find some semblance of normalcy, she is abruptly swept up into a whirlwind of misadventures, at the center of which is a certain assassin who seems dead set on making her life much more difficult than it already is.

“Well, I can’t do anything about what I’m assuming is a lifetime of culturally ingrained superstitions. But I have to be able to do something to make you less tense around me.”
Which makes it so much worse, of course. The way she treats it as something that is her fault and therefore something she should do something about. Instead of reminding him witches aren't real and he really needs to grow the hell up.

Mac took Murdoc’s hand. It was large and warm, the skin rough on his palm. Calluses and tiny scars littered his hand, warn in place from his chosen trade. Mac’s heart thumped suddenly and he swallowed. He wasn’t sure why he was anxious about doing this. He’d set plenty of bones before, many of them worse injuries than this one. (But, then, none of them had been on Murdoc.)

Mac wakes up in the hands of an enemy, kidnapped on an undercover op. With the Phoenix team out of reach, he has no choice but to rely on an unlikely ally. Murdoc.
