    Summary

At the cusp of victory: failure. The final battle with Elgar’nan ends in catastrophe as the Last of the Evanuris shatters the Archon’s palace with the power of blight. Injured and rendered mortal, he has but one last advantage: it is into his hands that Jude Thorn, the Warden called Rook, has fallen.

Compelled by blood magic, Jude now stands at Elgar’nan’s side. Yet he falls not into the role of a supplicant, but a cunning advisor and confidant who serves faithfully at his Lord’s side. Meanwhile, Elgar'nan finds himself leaning more of an ear to his advisor than he had ever planned, as parts of what he once was unfathomably give Jude's words heavy weight in his heart.

Yet shackles of affection are shackles all the same, and love compelled by magic is a compulsion still. Jude finds himself caught between an unnamable urge to protect the Sun Himself and to bring forth the empire his God aches for, and his desire to protect the innocent and beat back the Blight. Not to mention his worry for his friends, who have all inexplicably rallied under the banner of the duplicitous Fen’Harel.
