A S7 fix-it in which Emily's trauma is acknowledged and Hotch doesn't want to take her for granted again.
“Thank you,” she says softly. She turns to meet his eyes, trying to make him understand that she means thank you for all of it. For putting so much on the line to keep her safe, knowing the pain it was going to cause. For visiting her in the hospital every moment he could, sitting in the quiet with her when neither of them knew what to say. For never asking her what the hell she was thinking going after Doyle alone with flashbang grenades and automatic weapons while the team tried to build a profile she already knew by heart.
“It’s alright,” he says. “Just let me drive you to the hotel, and promise me you’ll call tomorrow.”
Something squeezes tight in her chest when she realises he’s honestly worried this will be the last he sees of her. Tighter, when she realises it’s something she could do – she could run. She has a bag full of cash and two other identities that are still clean. Her heart races briefly with the possibility. It would be so easy compared to this mess.
“Emily,” he says. “Promise me.”

Summary
I’ve heard all of the beautiful, poetic lamentations about death. Grief. I’ve been hearing them since I was eleven years old and my sister decided to leave me behind. How death isn’t the end, but a new beginning. How grief is all the love we have to give, with nowhere to go. I don’t think that’s true. Death isn’t beautiful, and it isn’t a beginning. It's destructive, corrosive. It’s the end of everything, even for those left behind. It's the price we pay for love.
