'Family, was a rather complicated way to define voluntary relationships, in one way or another, everyone was forced into their very first bond with their ceremonising first cry. The struggle came with keeping those boats afloat, fanning dying embers and cutting off weak links.
Dazai never really struggled with that last part, he didn’t even try with the formers. His only lasting relationships were the ones simmering with unfiltered contempt from his family, those who survived, really, and his complicated, twisted, rotting bond with Mori Ougai. Meeting the closest thing to a father figure at the ripe and vulnerable age of fourteen, living with him for the next four years, and struggling to cope without him for the following four, did things to someone’s binary definition of relationships, paternal ones at the very least.'
