Calls of his name echoed from the deck as he hauled himself up onto the boat’s edge, heart hammering, eyes darting across the thrashing waves before he lunged forward and disappeared beneath the dark, surging water.
The moment he hit the water, it wrapped around him like a living entity, pulling at his limbs in ways that felt impossibly familiar. His legs felt strange, heavy and alien, as if the water itself was reshaping him—instinctively, he tried to fight it, but the movement was automatic, inevitable. Fear twisted in his stomach, but beneath it, a fierce, wild joy surged—the ocean was alive in him, and he was alive in it. He was weightless, unstoppable, but exposed. He tugged his shirt free, letting the water cling to his bare torso while the lower half of his body glinted with emerging scales. With a final shuddering pulse, his legs fused, scales ripping into existence, a tail lashing through the water. Gills opened along his neck with a soft hiss of bubbles, and suddenly, he breathed not air, but ocean itself.

“We haven’t done this since middle school,” Will says, voice barely above a whisper.
“Huh,” Mike whispers back. “Yeah, guess not.”
A couple years ago, Mike read a National Geographic article about a phenomenon called the polar night. In the farthest north and south regions of the globe, there are weeks, sometimes months depending on how close you are to the poles, where the sun does not rise above the horizon, plunging the world into a perpetual nighttime. Living in such conditions, the article had explained, can affect one’s circadian rhythm, heighten issues with concentration and energy levels, and cause a spike in depressive symptoms among local populations. Some resort to using light therapy lamps to mimic the daylight.
It was only after the Byers moved away, all those years ago, that Mike began to understand what the prolonged absence of the sun can do to a person.
The Upside Down is gone, and everyone has made it out unscathed. In the aftermath of the not-so-end of the world, snowballs turn into avalanches. Sometimes it just takes time.

He laughs, “you don’t like my hair?”
“I’m sorry—I didn’t mean it. I really love it. It’s just that you're old and different now, it’s scary,” his hands scrunch into Will’s shirt.
“Okay. You’re very drunk,” he pushes Mike off of him gently. Mike’s arms clumsily reach out in an attempt to hold him again. “You know you shouldn’t compliment a gay guy like that. He might get the wrong idea.”
Mike furrows his brows at him. If he was sober, Mike would be able to pick up the sarcasm in his voice, but right now his brain is functioning at an all time low. “Good thing I’m gay then. That’s the idea I want them to have.”or
Will hasn't talked to Mike for two years. He's happily living his life at college in San Diego. Max's dad just so happens to have a beach house in the same place. So she brings them all on vacation.
Problems arise when Mike drunkly comes out to him. Why should that matter to Will though? He's over Mike.Tittle is a lyric from 'Actor' by Conan Gray
