Five clans trace their annals to the Fujiwara dynasty, hoarding secrets, wealth, arsenals, and servile Demons. Through forbidden means they have given their bloodlines powerful abilities, and keep strict control of their genealogies and progeny.
In the 80’s, the Japanese government created the National Warlock Corps. Between making it a branch of the the JSDF or the National Police, the latter won out — better have magic cops than magic soldiers. The Clans muscled their way in before the ink was dry. There is no masquerade, and yet that world is hidden from public view by the sheer incurious nature of mankind, drudgery of police bureaucracy, and welcome spread of urban legends and new-age esoterics on the internet.
