Summary
The crowd parts as Dina barrels through, her jacket half-on and her boots untied, panic written clear across her features. Terror replaces the momentary relief at seeing her alive and unharmed when he sees how frantic she is. That girl doesn’t panic; not like this.
Before he can take another step, she skids to a stop in front of him. “Where’s Ellie?”
“What—”
“She was covering for me,” Dina chokes out, the words tumbling over each other in her rush to get them out. “I wasn’t feeling well, so she took my shift. Where is she?”
Tommy’s world tilts. Ellie. Inside. The words don’t connect at first, then slam into him so hard that he bends forward, hands bracing on his knees as his vision tunnels. Ellie was inside when the fire broke out, and now…
Not Ellie. Christ, not Ellie.

“What’s wrong?” He asks, stepping back and inviting her inside. She takes the offer and slips in, careful not to touch him when she does. “Everything alright? Joel okay?”
“He will be,” she says enigmatically, and he has a moment of rolling his eyes at this very teenaged flare for drama. Whatever she’s come over for doesn’t appear to be an emergency–he has faith enough that she’d be more urgent in her actions if it were–so now he’s more curious than terrified.
“You wanna elaborate on that?” He asks with a lift of one brow, shutting the door and leaning against it casually, arms crossed loosely over his chest. “Because it certainly sounds-”
“I need to burn a scar off of my arm,” she says plainly, posture ramrod straight from her place on the armchair she’s settled in.
He blinks.

Summary
Ellie is content like this, Joel busy doing something, and her just sitting with him, watching. It reminds her of after Silver Lake, when Joel would drag her around because she couldn’t stand being without him. She thinks back to the first time she woke up and couldn’t feel Joel’s presence at her back. She had rolled over, expecting to find him sitting across from her, stoking the fire, only to notice that Joel’s sleeping bag was empty, and he was nowhere to be seen. She remembers the fear, that all encompassing fear she’d felt thinking that David had come and snatched him away from her, just like he snatched everything else from her. That fear had been mixed with white hot anger, and she had clung onto her sleeping bag so tight, she’d almost ripped holes in it. She’d cried, hard, and only calmed down once Joel had returned. She remembers the trembling, and the shaking, but mostly the feeling of being held by strong, yet gentle arms. She also remembers when she came to later that night, and apologised to Joel for acting so childish.
“You have nothin’ to apologise for, baby,” he’d said, running his fingers through her hair in a way that always helps her calm down, even now. “You’ve done nothin’ wrong,”.

And he realizes… there are parts of her that are weird because, well, she’s Ellie. She likes space and puns and dinosaurs. She does goofy voices and curses too much and she asks so many questions. He’s pretty sure that if she’d grown up before the outbreak, she would have been screened for ADD or something. And some of her weirdness is being a kid growing up in the apocalypse, like not knowing what a seatbelt is.
But parts of her weirdness?FEDRA did that.

Summary
Spending time with Tommy makes Joel happy, which causes a sharp pain in Ellie’s gut. Joel and Tommy have decades of inside jokes and shared history that she can’t ever be part of.
Family is Joel’s driving force: You keep goin’ for family. Joel crossed the country for Tommy, only bringing Ellie along as an afterthought. Ellie hopes she’s not quite cargo anymore, but she doesn’t like it when the difference is laid out so starkly in front of Joel: the brother he practically raised and the feral raccoon that imprinted on him against his will. A side-by-side comparison of her and the prodigal brother isn’t doing her any favors. She needs to find a way to get Tommy out of the way without losing Joel, and it’s proving difficult.
(Or: Tommy worms his way past Ellie’s defenses to become Uncle Tommy again.)
