“Prince Draco.” The sound of the guard’s voice sent a shiver through him.
“You may speak,” Draco said carefully.
“I apologise.” Potter’s voice had an aching edge of sincerity to it, none of the snark from before. “An Alpha isn’t able to control who… responds to his scent.”
Anger flared in Draco’s chest. How dare this guard make some assumption about what Draco could sense? “Apologies are for equals. You’re less than nothing to me, guard,” Draco spat. “Don’t you dare assume otherwise. You’ll speak only when spoken to, or you’ll find yourself exiled from this kingdom without a sickle to your name.”
“Yes, my prince.”
My prince. His voice, rich and dark. His scent, musk and spice and loamy earth. It wasn't proper for a guard to smell that way. To make Draco's spine draw taut as a bowstring, to kick up sparks in the pit of his belly. Like a promise. Like a calling.
Draco wondered if the guard could smell him. If he could feel Draco's body responding to his scent, wanton and ready. Slick.
He cast the guard a final glance, chest tight and cheeks hot.
Draco needed to rid himself of this guard. And soon.

Omegas are treated as little more than property, meant to be bought and sold, expected to serve their alphas and bear children without question. At least, that’s the bullshit they're taught in school. But Regulus is determined to take control of his future and avoid the oppressive role society has planned for him.
If he’s destined to be tied down to an alpha for the rest of his life, then so be it— he’ll just find himself someone who’s easy to manage, someone he can keep under his thumb while he calls the shots— someone like James Potter, an alpha who’s far too sweet for his own good.
But currently being fostered by his brother’s strict alpha, Remus, complicates things. As it slowly becomes clear that the man’s role in his life is not as temporary as Regulus initially thought. All this time, Regulus believed he was the one in control, only to discover that his fate was never really his to decide at all.

Officially, Auror Potter has been assigned to the duty of Draco’s probationary officer after he is released from house arrest. Unofficially, Harry’s being pressured by the Head Auror to drum up false accusations against him.
Draco is working as a professional illustrator and calligrapher. Harry doesn’t believe Draco is still a criminal, but there’s something strange about Draco’s portfolio - and Draco never, ever lets him get a look inside it.
Author’s note: My original intention with this fic was to write a bit of fluff about Draco doodling Harry’s name in his notebook, and what came out was a snarky, slow burn case fic and something close to an artistic manifesto. I like this better.
