"Of all the places I imagined you had vanished to, I did not expect my master's tomb to be among them," Shakra comments mildly.
Hornet has not been seen for a week after the black threads' vanishing. When Shakra stumbles upon her, she cannot let her disappear again. Despite her hesitation, Hornet agrees to travel with Shakra for a while, going nowhere in particular.
Hornet can hardly explain herself if she doesn't understand her own reasoning, but Shakra is patient. Some questions—some experiences—just need a bit of breathing room.

Bronya wasn't sure what to think of recent events.
Following that incident, something had happened to Kiana. Of course, Bronya wasn't a stranger to eye color changes and strange glows, but it was probably something deeper than a simple aesthetic alteration.
For one, Bronya was relatively certain that the old Kiana didn't have the habit of shoving a miniature dragon into others' hands as if presenting a cat.
Whether that was an improvement was still under analysis.

Sent to guard the wealthy mining city of Kobalt, they are forced into a partnership neither of them wants and both of them understand far too slowly. What begins as fear, provocation, and professional necessity (Ch. 8) slowly becomes trust (Ch. 27), then friendship (Ch. 37), then a bond like none before (Ch. 50). A bond that develops into attraction (Ch. 68), intimacy (Ch. 107), desire (Ch. 112)... and perhaps even love.
This is a slow, character-driven story about loneliness, desire, class, trauma, violence, care, and the frightening moment when two people realize that the other has become necessary. It features a large cast, mystery, monster fights, emotional intimacy, morally ambiguous choices, and a very slow burn between two women who are much better at surviving than at admitting what they feel.
