How does a slave from the stables end up being shipped off to a neighboring country as a gift to warm the bed of the crown prince? Well, Hua Cheng wasn't actually in the room at the time but, judging by everything he's put together and what Yin Yu has told him, it goes something like this.
1 The King of Yong’an wants to conquer Xianle.
2 The King doesn't want Xianle to know that yet so that he can take them by surprise.
3 To bring this about the King wants a spy deep enough in Xianle’s royal court that they can learn the royal family’s most intimate and military secrets, and who could be better positioned to do that than a concubine?
So 4 the King of Yong’an tells his inner counsel that the first step in his invasion plan is to give the crown prince a concubine.
Or Hua Cheng is given to the crown prince of Xianle as a concubine with the job of seducing him in order to spy on him for the neighboring kingdom of Yong'an, but when real feelings get involved things get ...complicated

Summary
“Wei Ying?” The voice which speaks into the sudden silence is hoarse and shaking and ...familiar?
There’s a shift like movement to his right and he tenses automatically against the blow.
“Wei Ying?” No blow comes. Only that voice again and yes, it’s definitely familiar. Familiar but ...not from now. It’s a ‘before’ voice and he doesn’t let himself think about ‘before’ so he shies away from the memory, pushing it down down down as he does all memories that come before the dark and the pain. Still, something seeps through, an image: long black hair, jade pale skin, white robes, a headband, and lips set into a disapproving line.
OR Wei Wuxian is being kept in some dark horrible dungeon underground until the day Lan Wangji finds out he's still alive.

Abruptly the rest of the world comes into terrible focus. Lan Zhan puts his phone down, closes the blinds, turns off the light. In the darkness, he buries his face in his palms and screams silently in his mind.
He turns on the light. He opens the blinds. He texts Wei Ying, "This time, you let him kiss you."

Oh, who is Wei Ying kidding. Bad sex is forever. No one forgets it. He certainly hasn’t; all of his failed past attempts are currently parading themselves in his brain, like a fashion show of bad dick maneuvers.
