This story began with two questions.
Why was Alicent Hightower never quite bold enough to refuse her marriage to Viserys and stand against her father?
And why was Daemon Targaryen never quite clever enough to expose Otto Hightower's schemes before it was too late?
But what if they had been?
What if Alicent chose differently?
What if Daemon acted sooner?
What if House Hightower and House Targaryen were bound together long before the Dance?

“Alicent," he'd say, with that particular look in his eyes, the same no-nonsense, but clearly privileged to spread his own glimmer, as he'd put his hands over hers, lean in until where his chest ended and her back began became a question, and one without an answer—at least until he fixed whatever she'd done wrong with that same careless little precision that used to drive her mad with its sheer gall, intensity and most of all correctness.

“Enter, Aemond.” Alicent motioned for her handmaidens to leave; she assumed Aemond was here to apologise for displaying himself at tonight’s dinner. Whenever Aemond did something that displeased her, he would come at night to beg for her forgiveness, many a time on his knees, kissing her hand. She knew how good her boy was deep down, so it always upset her to see him act so terribly.
But, Aemond was not here to apologise. It was he who seeked an apology.
