Maybe it was the way Steve hovered around Dustin like a worried mother hen with shocking vocabulary. Maybe it was the fact that he kept throwing himself at Upside Down disasters armed with nothing but a bat and misplaced confidence all for the sake of just helping. Or maybe it was because Nancy Wheeler had broken up with him.
Somehow, all of Nancy’s exes became significantly cooler once she had dumped them.
Whatever the reason, Mike had started moping at the Harrington house.

“I’m heading to the gym with Jeff,” Steve said once Jonathan had lowered his headphones. “I’ll be back in maybe an hour or two.”
“Okay,” Jonathan said, tilting his head up to accept the kiss Steve placed on his lips. “I’ll be here.”
Steve smiled and kissed the top of his boyfriend's head once more before he left, lingering a moment to watch him put his headphones back on and turn back to his work. He watched him for a moment, admiring the way he looked in the dim lamplight, so completely gorgeous and in his element that it made Steve's heart contract and his stomach burn. He loved this—he loved him.

Steve tried not to resent the fact that he was spending Christmas alone. It was fine. He had done it before—not like it was the first time his parents had been out of town on the day. He usually threw some Christmas Eve party and found someone to distract himself with while he tried not to wonder if any of them would actually want to spend Christmas with him or if he was just an easy lay away from their annoying extended families. Then he would wake up hungover the next morning with a mess to clean up and some package on the door with an expensive gift from his parents that he didn’t want signed Love, Mom & Dad because they never believed in childhood indulgences like Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy.

“I’ve always wanted to have kids,” Robin had started with a shrug.
It was true, she just never voiced it because of all the expectations and assumptions involved. Her mom guilted her enough without knowing a grandchild was a possibility, and her female friends always acted like motherhood was a nightmare, including Nancy.
“Bringing a literal human being into the world and watching them grow into their own person seems amazing. Like, they start out as basically a parasite, right? Then they experience the world, and learn to express themselves, and grow into an individual who takes parts of you into their own life. They develop their own ideas, and interests, and sense of humor, and–”
“I know, Robin.” The pain in his voice had stopped her rambling more than his interruption. “Jonathan and I want kids for all those reasons, but…”

“Hey, what’s the matter?” Steve asks that morning, when he noticed that Jonathan hasn’t touched his breakfast, “You feeling alright, Byers?”
“It’s going to sound stupid.” Jonathan mumbles. He’s in the process of pushing his food round his plate with his fork, yet he’s been doing that for the last ten minutes without eating a single bite.
Which is kind of weird, seeing as he normally loves a cooked breakfast. Not to mention that this morning, Steve remembered to cook extra tomatoes as well as sprinkling lots of pepper on the eggs, exactly the way that Jonathan usually likes it.
“After what we’ve been through together, I don’t think there’s anything left that you could say to surprise me.” Steve says, jokingly.
