Then, Zoey swirls her wine, gaze drifting toward the sleeping form on the couch.
“You know, Mira and I…” Rumi’s breath catches. Here it is. Zoey continues, voice soft as a confession. “…We talked. About you.”
Oh, how Rumi’s heart stops, her ribs a straitjacket holding her hopes together, squeezing her fears too. She forces herself to look up.
“About me?”
Zoey nods. “You. Me. Her. You know how she is, always ten steps ahead emotionally. She actually… She said she thinks you’re amazing. That she’d understand if…”
“Zoey,” Rumi starts, needing to say something, before her veins catch fire. “You and Mira—”
“I know what we are.” Zoey interrupts gently. “And she wasn’t mad when she said that. She said love doesn’t have to fit into neat little boxes, you know? That maybe it’s bigger than any of us thought.”—
OR, It's late at night at the penthouse's studio, there's an unfinished song playing on loop and the wine in Rumi's veins makes her want to be bolder, for once. The faint buzz of the monitors, the city lights flickering through the window blinds, Mira’s sleepy breathing, and the million words trapped between Rumi and Zoey— it all blurs into the background hum of 'almost'.

Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.

Mira jumped violently, eyes flying open as the sound tore her from her quiet doze. The remaining popcorn in her lap went flying, landing all over the three girls, the carpet, and Derpy, who was still asleep as if nothing was happening.
Her glasses jolted with the movement, now sitting partially lopsided on her face, and her hand flew to her heart like it was going to beat out of her chest.
“Zoey!” She yelled, giving the smaller girl the most fiery glare she could muster. Her hand still clutched at her chest where it heaved up and down, panting as she tried to even her breathing. “What the actual fuck!”
“I’m so sorry!” Zoey said, wiping tears from her eyes as she and Rumi howled with laughter on both sides of her. “I forgot all about that one until it was too late!”
