Michael could feel everybody’s eyes on him, watching his every move, judging him for not being able to soothe his own child. He took Nora out of the carrier and turned her over so he could put her closer, rocking her a bit.
He could hear that Manes stopped talking, and from the corner of his eyes, he watched the man as he walked closer to where Michael was sitting. With his free hand, he closed this notebook, ready to pack his things and leave the classroom.
“I’m so sorry,” Michael muttered, wanting for the ground to open up and swallow him. “I’ll… uhm… I’m going to..” he motioned his hand towards the exit.
“May I?” Manes reached out and belatedly, Michael realised he was asking Micheal to hand him Nora. While his expression didn't change, his brown eyes were kind and Michael couldn’t see a hint of annoyance or pity.

Henry’s face, smushed into the bend of his arm, stays alarmingly still.
“Excuse me.”
The beer bottle on Alex’s stomach begins to wobble, and Alex only narrowly catches it before it dumps over on his chest. He rolls over and leans on one of his arms.

Silence stretches over the living room, Henry’s face hovering above him from the couch. Alex stares at the rug until he can’t avoid Henry’s gaze anymore, then blinks up at him slowly.
“Right,” Henry echoes eventually.
