Title is just the name of the song Keep Your Rifle By Your Side (particulary the choir version) which was the inspiration for this fic.
Background information that may or may not get expanded on:
The rest of the world finally got tired of America and attacked, and managed to defeat the superpower. However instead of the land going to whichever country was decided on, the land went to someone who should be long dead. Someone that America kept a secret for his safety.Now the one left behind has to figure out how he's going to survive with the entire world against him.

Summary
As Virgil continues his hard working life at Joja, after the car crash four years ago, stress continues to pile up. His anxiety is worse than ever, depression at an all time high and he eventually passes out on the bus ride home. When he wakes, his doctor tells him that his body is literally starting to shut down from stress. In an effort to keep his patient alive, Dr. Piciani has Virgil leave his job at Joja.
After everything Virgil is at a loss for what to do with himself, until he finds an old letter from his grandfather who died when he was 10. Is this it? Could this be his fresh start away from the city that causes him so much pain?

Listen, there were a lot of au's and series on tik tok that gave me inspiration. Not gonna lie, alot of this was inspired by several different tik toks (sorry it autocorrects if I do it any other way) and I was on new medication when I wrote this. Sorry.
OH RIGHT A SUMMARY- UH
Basically Thomas sniffs out some bull from Patton, (this was written a while ago) and calls him out on it. When Patton wont spit it out, he remembers something Virgil had said once, and summons him to get the truth. That's all I can say without spoiling it.

Summary

Anyway, we were given three paintings to choose from (there are only three of us in the class) and I got the American Goth. We were told to write the story behind the paintings, and so here's my story for why the two people in the painting look so grumpy (or some other emotion I'm not good at reading emotions.)
