“Here’s your coat, Alexander,” John said, taking it off and passing it back over. The warmth from the fire would be able to keep him warm through the night.
“Keep it.”
“Excuse me?”
“Keep the coat, Laurens.”
“I—” John had no idea what to say. “I am sure I must have misheard you. Hamilton, you cannot just give me your coat.”
“Whyever not?”
“Because— because—” He didn’t want to say 'because you’re poor and I’m worried that this is the only one you own,' because that felt rude.
“If you’re worried about me, do not fret. I am to be wed to a Schuyler, remember? I have plenty of coats. Plus, that one looks better on you anyway.”
He looked down at the coat, a muted dark green color. “Really? I thought you loved green.”
“I do.” Alexander said simply, smiling at John.

Summary
It's been the best six months of John's life. He still had bad days, days when he couldn't even drag himself out of bed, but they were becoming less and less common. He'd found his soulmate. Everything was starting to piece itself together.
But now he has to work out how to keep it together when he goes home to South Carolina for three weeks during summer break. He cant help but be terrified that so much time spent around his father will undo all the progress he's made.

Summary
He grew up in Nevis—a tiny island in the Caribbean—until he was five. When his mother died, Alexander was sent to live with a cousin. Alexander remembered the smell of vomit. He remembered that he had recovered first and that he had gone outside to empty the bucket. When he came back, he tried to tell his mother—but she was already lying in bed, her eyes closed, her body growing colder and colder on its way to the afterlife.
His cousin committed suicide a few weeks later. He didn’t leave a note or any explanation. One day, when Alex came back from school, he found him hanging, a small stool kicked aside.
Alexander remembered shouting. He remembered stepping closer. He had seen his cousin’s cheeks streaked with tears, and his lips purple from lack of air.
He was cold when Alex found him.
