    Summary

Given Ilya and Shane's history, they should be able to handle a few weeks apart. So when Ilya was out with an injury and Shane needed to head back on the road, they would cope. Shane would be occupied with adjusting to his new team and Ilya would be occupied with twitter and the trials and tribulations of British Bakers.

And they would be just so normal about it. Obviously.

Oh my god that sexting scene at the end of chapter 4 is genuinely insane

    ———

watch. “I really have to go.”

    “So, go.”

    “I’ll miss you.”

    “I know, many people will.”

    “I love you.”

Ilya smiled and Shane thought he was going to shoot back with a ‘yes, many people do’ (which was true Shane thought with a happy little thrum) but he just lifted Shane’s hand to his lips and kissed it.

“I love you too,” he steered Shane to the direction of the taxi, the driver of which looking profoundly unimpressed. “Go win some games.”

    ——

    👑
Rozanov: incredible you played so well through your tears because you miss me so much

    Dykstra: somehow we manage

Chouinard: we need little lockets with a picture of your face in it

Bood: wait you guys dont already have one? i do

Rozanov: shane does too, but its not a picture of my face

Shane rolled his eyes, freshly showered and splayed out on his bed. He was bone tired, waiting for one last text from Ilya before he crashed out.

Ilya: do not spend entire night thinking about second period

    Shane: I wont

Ilya: so convincing. You need nice distraction?
    - going from captain to husband is just so devastating for some reason, he knows him so well

    ———

There was something familiar about Luca's evasiveness. Ilya had seen it coming from a mile off, but Shane couldn't help but pity him in that moment. He watched Luca scurry over to the elevators and rose from his seat as well. He felt Wiebe watching him carefully.

"Luca!" Shane flung an arm out to stop the elevator door closing. Luca's expression didn't read pleased about this.
    - captain shane :(((

    Harris: Hi, Shane!
    Harris: This is Harris Drover.
Harris: I got your number from Ilya.
Harris: Sorry to bother you, but I had a question.
Harris: I know you’re coming in to sign contracts tomorrow, and I had an idea for a social media thing to announce your signing, if you’d be up for it?

    Shane: Oh, yeah, okay.
Shane: I’ll be there, so we can do whatever.
Shane: Always happy to help the team with a little internet humiliation that’ll be around for decades.

    Harris: Perfect!
Harris: I promise, I think you’ll really like this, though.
    Harris: No humiliation involved.
Harris: The only caveat is, you can’t tell Ilya.

    Shane: Okay?
    Shane: Why?

    Harris: Well.
    Harris: Here’s what I’m thinking.

    Summary

“We just got to go in there,” Shane said, pointing at the door, “and decide how we want to lay out the room.”

“Yes,” Ilya did a sharp decisive nod, before wincing and rubbing his head.

They both stood there for a breath, and then Ilya ruined it.

    “For our Stanley cup.”

Shane has indulged, maybe a bit too much, in his love of how good they are at hockey. Ilya does the opposite of complaining.

Absolutely incredible, the timbits, the rolex, their names being on all the awards together, jesus, their trophy room

    ———

“– but because it’s the first award I can say what I really want to say.”

He scanned the crowd, looking past the lights to where he’d left Shane, “thank you to my team, and my coaches, and most of all thank you to my husband, Shane Hollander. This game would be boring without you.”

    Summary

Ilya’s brows quirked again, and he flicked open the first page of the textbook, ‘and you decided to learn Russian now because...?’

‘Because I married a Russian man, and I figured it was about time I learned.’

‘You never learned with me.’ Ilya said.

‘No.’ Shane replied, tersely, ‘there was a lot I never did with you.’

Or: After Shane's college relationship ends in heartbreak, he patches up his wounds by marrying a wealthy older man, and he's so sure his life is perfect. That is, until his ex re-enters the picture, and he wonders if maybe he got it all wrong.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Oh my god this is one of the most beautiful stories i’ve ever read, the quietness and peace and safety and pillowy softness of them being in love, it’s too much to handle

    ———

This time, when Shane slept in the warmth of Ilya’s arms, he didn’t dream at all. He just saw billows of cream white and pink, soft peach and forget-me-not blue.

    ———

And it was in that black, that his phone rang again. When he answered, he held it up to his ear, and for a moment they just sat there, listening to each other breathe. In the background Ilya could hear the sound of traffic, the honking of a horn, the low hum of a francophone pop song playing on the radio, until eventually, Shane let out a long, slow exhale and said: ‘I love you, too.’

And it flooded through Ilya like alcohol. It made him feel drunk, dazed, knocked back off his feet. The wonder of being told when he’d already known and the certainty of what it meant.

‘Ilya, I love you.’ He said again.

    ———

‘Okay, okay.’ He said, capturing Shane’s mouth in one more kiss, ‘let me help you. Tell me what you need me to do.’

‘Tell me that you love me.’ Shane replied, his forehead touching Ilya’s and making him huff out a disbelieving, breathless laugh.

‘Surely I can do something for you more difficult than that.’

    ———

In summer when the sun rises, it washes the lake light blue and gold. The water is cold, and it laps over Shane’s bare feet with soft whispers between pebbled stones. Overhead a bird is calling, and Shane looks up to find it, and is greeted instead by cotton candy clouds, billowing like towering castles in the sky. They’re massive and he wishes he was a thousand metres tall, so he could slide his fingers over their rounded shape, feel their texture beneath his skin.

    Summary

Hayden Pike and his group chat of coworkers are pretty sure their new manager Shane has a parasocial obsession with a professional hockey player.

He talks about him constantly, knows everything about him, watches every game, and even has candid photos of him that are definitely not available through conventional sources. So naturally, they decide to intervene to find him a man who actually knows he exists.

Shane, for his part, has no idea what they're talking about.
