Eddie volunteered to be the record keeper on a standard ship for a few months. Regular contract work. He did not, in fact, volunteer to be nearly killed by Carlton Drake in a deliberate crash landing onto an alien planet in hopes to coax out the lone creature that lurks there.
He never volunteered to fall in love, either. It seems like some things are the same no matter where you are.
