“We should stop,” Sam pants the next time he draws back. But his hands somehow end up on Bucky’s waist, a rough grip that makes his knees weak and makes an unfamiliar warmth burn in his stomach.
“Probably,” Bucky agrees, because it’s the logical thing to say. He knows it and Sam knows it and all they need to do is just – stop. It might be awkward for a bit, but they can just pretend it never happened and go on bickering with each other until this mission is done. That’s what should happen.
But if Bucky’s being honest with himself, it’s not what he wants to happen.
(Sam and Bucky sleeping together throughout TFATWS. 5 times they say it means nothing, and the 1 time it means everything.)

Pain, submission, and need have become his strange lifelines, ways to feel something real when everything else threatens to dissolve. And always, Steve and Sam have been there, catching the pieces of him he thought were lost.
He knows it’s wrong, but it’s the only way he knows to stay tethered, to keep from disappearing into the emotional void that drags him back into his past. Every touch, every contact, every ruthless motion presses into him like fire and water colliding—pain and pleasure merging until he can no longer tell if there was ever any limit to what they could take from him.
Bad habits always end badly, but Bucky can’t help falling back into them, at least not when he knows Steve and Sam will be there to keep him from being consumed by his own shadows.

“I don’t care about that, just don’t take forever.” His hand is on Sam’s shoulder, the coolness of the metal seeping through the layers of his flight gear. He shrugs it off as he turns to face him, leveling what he imagines is a rather unamused look at Bucky. “You want me to sleep on the couch?”
“No, of course not. You’re a grown ass man, you’d barely fit on that thing.” Sam doesn’t look at Bucky as he speaks, his hands finding the clasps and zippers of the suit. He hears Bucky start to speak, though he pays it very little attention, focused rather on getting the top half off. “Sam, are you even listening?”

Someone the public can root for, someone who humanizes you.” Val’s gaze, which had been fixed on Bucky with surgical precision, softens ever so slightly, morphing into something resembling… consideration.
It’s a dangerous shift. Mel feels a prickle of unease at the back of her neck. Val’s 'solutions' are rarely simple, and never without a hidden cost. When she finally says, “Someone to hold your hand,” the words hang in the air like a poisoned dart, and Mel knows, with sickening certainty, exactly where that dart is aimed.
Mel feels the shift before she sees it. The silence stretches, elongating into something suffocating. The precise, quiet click of Valentina’s pen as she caps it punctuated the room like a countdown, each second ticking away toward an unknown detonation.
Then Val turns her head—slow, deliberate, a predator making its choice—and looks directly at her.

Steve faltered for a moment, and Bucky almost broke the reverie to tell him not to stop, that it was okay, that this was catharsis, this was relief, that Steve hadn’t hurt him even though Bucky kind of wanted him to—but he didn’t have to. Steve leaned down and pressed his face into the crook of Bucky’s neck and Bucky felt his skin grow hot with Steve’s tears, because of course he understood, of course he felt the same, of course.
Or, two weeks after Steve rescues Bucky from the Germans after Azzano, they catch up properly. It hurts in new ways.
