Summary
Still grieving from a devastating loss and weighted down by a recent failed mission to retrieve Sasuke, Naruto is struggling to regain his footing. Something made all the more difficult when he begins having experiences that he's being told aren't actually happening. As his own reality diverges more and more from that of everyone else around him, Naruto's beliefs are tested and he finds himself questioning everything he always thought he could trust: his goals, his friends, and most of all, himself.

Shikamaru had seen the promotion coming. He didn't want it but he couldn't say no. He didn't know the guy promoted with him, Uzumaki Naruto. He had never seen him in the village, to be exact. That was weird. They were the same age, they should have been classmates at the Academy. Unless... his teammates weren't his teammates, more like bodyguards. But why? Being the Hokage's son hardly was reason enough (Asuma had never had bodyguards). Could there be something else? Not that Shikamaru cared. He didn't. Nope. He had other problems to deal with. He didn't need that guy in his life. He really didn't. Until he did.

Summary
He knows his name, Uzumaki Naruto, but what does it mean? Where does Uzumaki come from? Is that really even his name? It can’t be a standard name they give orphans, because even when he still stayed in the orphanage, he was the only one with that name. Plenty of kids had no last name at all, which makes it more believable that Uzumaki is his real family name.
But what does that mean? Who are the Uzumaki? Is he the only one left? How can he find out? Were his family shinobi? Merchants? Regular civilians?
He is determined to find out.
