Summary
Jessica Stanley’s lungs burned, but she didn’t slow. The walls blurred in streaks of ivory and shadow, ancient carvings flashing past too quickly to register. The air was cold and stale, as if it hadn’t moved in centuries. The fear vibrated in her bones.
'I want to go home.'
The thought pulsed through her like a heartbeat.
She pictured Forks — the wet sidewalks, the familiar grey sky. Angela smiling at her over a cafeteria tray. Eric looking adorably nervous. Mike’s ridiculous grin.
Normal. Loud. Safe.
The scream that followed was not safe.
