I could feel quickened puffs of winter cold air heaving out of him, and I released a small one myself. A nightmare then.
I placed my hands on either side of his face, ignoring the prickling of frost that bloomed at the contact. “Rhys!!” I yelled again, directly into his face. I shook his shoulders, rolled his face back and forth between my palms, but my efforts didn’t stir him.
I could think of only one other option. It felt like an invasion of his privacy to enter his mind, but the situation was too emergent to get lost in that question of morality. Besides, he had woken me from my own nightmares in my mind before. I could do this. I took his face in my hands again and screwed my eyes shut, feeling myself walk the thread between my own mind and his, running my hands blindly along his mental shields the way I had his bedroom floor. I let out a pained yelp. My vision is swarming with dark spots. An explosion happens beside me as I lay on the ground. My hands slipped away from the cauldron. The pain in my body shoots up to my head. A sharp pain forms at the top of my head, as if someone had stabbed me there and now twisting the sword. I opened my mouth for a scream but all I managed was to part my lips. Burn, my throat burns. My airway clenches, like it's tied up with a rope. My bones in my fingers crack… one by one. A stream of blood ran down my face.
A strange power courses through my veins. All I can feel is pain. I lie there silently, waiting for this to end…or maybe, this is what death feels like.
