Valentina had described Sentry as a God, he knew, and she hadn’t been wrong about that. At least not in John’s eyes anyway. If the Sentry was a God then John would fucking worship him like a God.
Fuck.
There was that mind numbing shame again creeping its way inside him. This was dumb. John was a fucking pervert and Bob definitely hadn’t realised how he’d reacted to Sentry, end of story. He didn’t want to think about this anymore. He was only driving himself slowly insane.

Summary
John assumes the Bad Guy Group of the Week kidnaps the first team member they can get their hands on, which just so happens to be him. But when they finally get him to whatever shithole they’re taking him to, he sees that he’s not the only one they grabbed.
“Oh, hey,” Bob says, not seeming nearly as upset about this as he should be if he’s pretending to be some helpless civilian. When John just blinks at him, he adds, “I’m the leverage.”

He doesn’t think he was always this angry.
Maybe a little mean, a little bitter for no reason other than he could be, but he wasn’t ever really cruel.
As a teenager he was popular, but kind. He had a sharp tongue and a quick mind, but he’d never used it to break anybody down, never had a harsh word for anyone.
He doesn’t know what the fuck happened to that kid, but now the anger claws at his ribs until his lungs have no room to expand. It’s a physical, tangible thing, the burn of it. White hot, like at any moment he could explode.

“Anybody broken?” He hears Bucky say, somewhere further back, and increases his pace. It’s not like he’s embarrassed about getting hit, has been in the line of fire long enough to know that there’s no shame in it, and yet somehow, with this team, he has the overwhelming urge to show as little weakness as possible.
Yelena would have a field day with that line of thinking, would lecture him about trust issues and team cohesion and a slew of other complaints, but what she doesn’t know won’t kill her.
It’s not like any of them trust him, anyway, so it’s all a bit hypocritical.
