Summary
Ryland doesn't know where he is, what he's doing, or why he's doing it. Summary
Dr Ryland Grace is kidnapped by a group of Astrophage-Denier terrorists determined to use him as leverage against Stratt. They initially plan to simply rough him up on a livestream, but quickly discover they can get much more emotive reactions from him a different way.
"This is for Eva Stratt. As you can see," he steps back theatrically to reveal me on the floor behind him, "I have your precious little science lapdog. He really is very pretty, isn’t he? I can see why you keep him around."
He walks back a few feet to where I’m sitting on the floor and strokes a finger down my cheek and along my neck. I try to pull away, but he grabs hold of my collar and yanks me back, pinning my head against his leg.
"We know you already received our list of demands along with the link to this livestream. The longer you delay, the longer I have to play with Dr Grace here. That’s really no bother for me, but I don’t think he’s going to like it very much, so tick-tock, Ms Stratt. Tick-tock."

When Grace gets seemingly teleported by means unknown into the SM-13 right as it was nearing The Light, both Simon and Grace have no idea what is happening. Grace knows he was supposed to be in his house on Erid, Simon knows this new guy cannot possibly be a hallucination, and Ava, upon hearing Grace ramble about theories for how he got there, knows that new guy is Smart. Could-Secure-Our-Survival Smart.

“Simon,” I place a hand under his chin to turn his head towards me, “It's ok, truly. There’s no trial you need to win. I want to do this for you. Please don’t neglect yourself for my sake, ok?”
He shivered in awe, leaning into my touch, “yes angel, promise.”
“Good, I'm glad,” I smiled. Then, I reach over to the plate. The burger was so soft and tender, I pinch off a small piece and hold it up to his lips, “Now, take a bite. And if you really don't like it, you don't have to eat it.”
