Summary
Hiro was so much like her. He was stubborn, he was intelligent, he was bright. A spitting replica, if not just for personality. So could he really be blamed for what he had chosen to do? He had motives; of couse...people always do. But his motives were good ones, surely? For him, at least. For others it was not suffice to say. For others, this whole thing would be a living nightmare. One they could not possibly wake up from. And for a young boy, with his whole life in front of him, it might even be an ordeal that he would not survive.

Summary
“Do you want to put away Ellie’s things?" Tommy asks. "We can put them in the attic for now.”
“The hell would we do that for?” Joel lifts up his dead little girl’s shirt, rolls his eyes at the dirt stains that didn’t come out, and folds it neatly.
Tommy swallows. “Cause she died, Joel. And maybe it’s too hard right now to…” he cuts himself off. Joel isn’t listening anymore. He unfolds and refolds the same shirt, his eyes glassy. “Joel—”
“—You got the roster out for next month yet? Was hoping to get Ellie’s birthday week off, I’ve got plans.” He shakes his head. “16, jesus.”
Tommy drops it. Ellie keeps living.
Ellie is presumed dead. Joel doesn't react the way Tommy thought he would.

Summary
It reminds her of that winter on the road, after Silver Lake, when they were both so beaten down that they could barely hunt or walk or scavenge for weeks. They’d sat holed up in that old gas station and ate cold beans and frozen berries and once or twice, some squirrels, some little rabbits. The meat was always stringy and tough; Ellie remembers the way it’d felt going down, greasy and slick, the way it pooled like rancid oil in her stomach. Some nights she’d have to sit propped up all night against Joel’s shoulder and breathe with her mouth open to keep from puking. She never, not once since they’d come back to Jackson, thought that she’d ever feel like that here.
*
After the horde settles in around Jackson, the town faces dire consequences as their food supply starts to run out.

Summary
Sarah Miller is, without a doubt, a daddy’s girl.
She never stood a chance, really. It’s always been just her and her father. Her mama died when she was just a baby, so young she couldn’t remember her face if she tried. And Daddy never brought home no girls from the bars or giggly waitresses like Uncle Tommy used to before he met Aunt Maria.
Never in her life has she had to share him.
That is, until Daddy comes home late on Thursday evening with news for Sarah.
(Ellie is a foster kid- Joel and Sarah take her in)

Summary
Jesse stood with his arms crossed, watching them approach with his mouth twisted into a frown that had the hairs on Joel's arm prickling. The moment they locked eyes across the road and Joel saw the shift in the boy’s posture, his heart sank into the tips of his dust-covered boots.
“Mister Miller,” Jesse said, but Joel already knew.
Or: A longer short story about the town of Jackson finding out about Ellie’s immunity after she gets bitten on patrol.
