Clark looks around himself, at the star system that should have been the final resting place of three astronauts, and only two of them are accounted for. The Hail Mary, and Dr Ryland Grace with it, are completely absent.
Clark floats for a moment, looking around himself in honest, total bafflement, as if Ryland Grace is going to appear from thin air if he wills it hard enough. He furrows his brow.
“Huh.”

‘No’ sits on the tip of Ryland’s tongue but doesn’t quite leave his mouth. Even though it is his answer, isn’t it? He doesn’t have a mate- a boyfriend- a partner, does he? He doesn’t remember not having one but then how can you remember a negative? He definitely lived alone, which would suggest he wasn’t in like, a serious relationship, right?
But then there’s the ring. The ring he’s constantly touching and messing with, usually without realizing it. Like right now for example.“It’s just… I don’t remember.”
