Doc sat on the front steps of his house and patted the step next to him. “Call me old fashioned, but I think an antique clock sounds nice. For that price it must be one heck of a clock.”
Lightning pulled up a picture on his phone and handed it to Doc who analyzed it. “It’s gorgeous. What does a seventeen-year-old want with a clock?” He passed the phone back.

Lightning pocketed his phone and shrugged again, “I just remember this one.”

    “Had one in your house?”

“No, my grandpa it in his house. I only met the guy once, but this is the exact clock he had in his house. He died a long time ago and my grandma died not long ago so they were auctioning off the house.”

“I see. Your parents weren’t too close to your grandparents then?”

“No, they didn’t like them. I don’t know why. Guess I was never close to my parents either. I was little and neither of my parents could watch me one day. They didn’t leave me home alone at that point and I guess he was a last resort. I know it felt tense when they talked.” Lightning shook his head and moved on with his story. “I was left at his house and while he was in the other room I had tried to move open a drawer he had told me to leave alone. I ended up moving the whole dresser trying to get the drawer open and scraping it across the clock. Scraped that big spot out of the side of it.”

Doc listened intently to the story with his hands folded and index fingers resting on his lips as his elbows rested on his knees.

“I was so scared he would be furious with me. I stood there shaking when he came in. He had told me not to touch the dresser! All he did was ask me if I did it and I nodded. He told me that it was important that I listened and gave me a talk about doing the right thing and owning up to mistakes. Then he brought me into the kitchen and let me help him make lunch. I guess I never did learn that lesson about owning up and listening, but I never forgot that he forgave me and the patience he showed me. Not many other people did that for me.”

“Sounds like the man had some insight,” Doc said.

“Must have. Wish I knew more about him and the relationship between him and my parents. My parents didn’t like when I asked about him and I guess I quit asking. I just saw the clock was up for sale and wanted it.”

“I think it was money pretty well spent,” Doc encouraged.

Lightning blushed a bit, “Hope you don’t mind, but I am having it delivered here.”

“I’d be honored to have it here. We can find a good spot for it. I have one question for you though.”

Lightning looked up confused, “what is it?”

“What on earth was your end goal in how long you thought you were going to hide from me and what was your explanation going to be for a huge antique grandfather clock being delivered to my front door?”

Lightning looked blank. “I hadn’t actually thought that far ahead.”

Doc chuckled, “didn’t think so. Let’s go get some food.”

    Summary

“Ya know, most of the fellas I read about who got stuck out in the middle of the ocean never made it back."

"Mater, you're not helping. And we're not in the middle of the ocean, we're in the middle of a lake."

"Same difference," his friend replied with a shrug.

Trapped on a lake in the middle of a hot summer day was not the way Lightning had thought his afternoon was going to go. Maybe things would’ve turned out differently if he hadn’t taken out a boat that didn’t belong to him… and one he didn’t really know how to operate.

Doc glanced up from his paper as Lightning stumbled down the final few steps, catching himself at the last minute. "You know that's going to hurt like hell tomorrow."

After a shower and a change, the kid no longer looked like a drowned rat, but there wasn't much to be done about the burns.

"Tomorrow? It hurts now. It feels like my skin's on fire." With a huff, Lightning collapsed on the entire length of the couch.

"I don't doubt it. Well, look at it this way, at least now you match the #95."

A groan was all the reply Doc received.

"Seriously, Lightning, what on earth made you think that was a good idea?"

"I never said it was a good idea," the kid shot back. "It was just an idea."

"Huh. Figures. You know you're going to have to tell Sarge that his boat is sitting out there on the shore with a broken engine and half a tackle box, right?"

"Ugh, don't remind me. I'll tell him in the morning. He'll just get mad if I tell him this late at night."

"He'll get mad no matter when you tell him."

    Lightning groaned once more.

"Maybe his wrath will teach you not to go scaring people half to death."

"Sorry, but to be fair, we didn't think you guys would worry so much. I mean, we weren't even gone that long."

"From sunup to sundown’s pretty long, kid. And when people don't hear from their loved ones for awhile, they tend to worry nine times out of ten."

A sigh floated through the room as Lightning flipped on his side, arm dangling off the couch. "Sorry..."

Mater departs shortly afterwards when he gets a call for a broken down vehicle, and Lightning is left to his devices. He takes the time to treat himself and head home, grabbing Mack’s package on the way by.

He digs into the gift bag, pulling out a black jacket with a tiny 95 embroidered on the front. A card falls out, and he briefly reads it.

Not necessarily,” he answers quickly. “Speaking of Mack, I wonder if-” His phone rings in his pocket, and he’s thankful for the distraction.

The faint buzz of vibration makes Doc redirect his attention out of politeness. Lightning presses the green answer button, getting to his feet. He starts down the hallway, maneuvering around the furniture. “Hey!”

“Hey, kid,” Mack’s voice floats from the phone in greeting. “Just made it here safe. Hope you’re having a good birthday!”

Lightning freezes and curses mentally for not being fast enough to exit the room. Doc’s gaze shoots up sharply, narrowing on him with a telling finality. His blood runs cold as he coughs into his sleeve. “Gee, thanks, Mack,” he answers quietly. “Have fun, okay? I’ll talk to you later.”

“You got it!” Mack beams back, and the call ends as he’s blissfully unaware of the bomb he’s dropped in Doc’s living room.

He takes his time slipping the phone back into his pocket. He’s unfortunately aware of the way Doc prepares his words, ever so calculating. His skin crawls.

Lightning just wanted to get this over with.

“So…” Doc speaks as Lightning shuffles back to the couch. “Were you going to tell me?”

He clears his throat awkwardly. “Uh, no. I wasn’t planning on it.”

Doc leans back against the cushions, ditching the TV remote on the coffee table. “Well, happy birthday.”

    “Thanks,” Lightning mumbles.

    “Did you want anything?”

Lightning is ready to answer no but the question does get him thinking. He could realistically get anything he wanted with his fame and paychecks combined, but there was no material item he really craved. Besides, the other things he could ask for were already in the town. Tires, paint jobs, and good food.

    He had all he needed.

“No,” he answers at last. “I don’t really celebrate my birthday like that.”

Doc hooks an arm over the back of the couch. “It doesn’t seem like you celebrate it at all.”

He shrugs. “Why should I? Half of the time, people forget. The other times it’s meaningless. Every person I’ve ever celebrated with has left,” he confesses, although he doesn’t sound terribly bitter. “It’s just another milestone that seems pointless! So I don’t even bring it up. I already have everything I could want.”

The doctor just listens, but doesn’t disguise the sympathy in his look very well. “I’d rather celebrate other people than myself. Besides, everything’s about me anyways. If I announced my birthday, I’d get hundreds of fan mail and Lightning McQueen propaganda galore. I’m not interested in it.”

She groans, peeking at him with one eye. “No thanks.”

“C’mon, sleeping beauty,” he teases her, shuffling to the passenger side door. “Don’t make me carry you bridal style.”

“Well, if you’re offering,” she mumbles. He shrugs.

    “If you insist.”

Now, it’s far from the most perfectly executed carry in the world, and really, they both should have ended up on the pavement. He scooped her into his arms with quite a bit of struggle (thank god everyone was asleep, he’d never recover from this one) and shut the car door with his foot. He locked the doors afterwards, and had to struggle to open the front door.

All the while, Sally was attempting to withhold her laughter, but it was a piss poor attempt.

After nearly knocking over the entirety of the kitchen, Lightning navigates them back to her bedroom, where he dumps her on the covers. He goes to change into leftover clothes, but she hooks him by the collar and brings him onto the bed beside her. “It’s too late for that,” she complains. “Just sleep.”

Sally half-asleep is quite the demon, he notes privately, and graciously turns off the bedside lamp. “Goodnight, then,” he scoffs.

She throws the blankets over them both, including Sminglesborf. “I love you, Stickers. And you too, Smingle.”

Lightning kisses her forehead adoringly. “I love you. The cow, not as much, but…”

Sally knees him beneath the sheets.

“Ow! Okay, fine, I love the cow too.”

“Good,” Sally says, satisfied. “Now go to bed.”

He tries. He truly tries, but he wonders how he’ll ever be able to do something ever again when all he can think about is her, and he decides that’s okay. He’ll never regret being in love no matter what.

Home is where the heart is; Yet, he found both.
